  1. Bellwork 11/12/13 Update Notebooks EQ: How was the war fought in the Southern colonies? TSWBAT evaluate the war in the South

  2. Bell-work 12/5/12EQ: How did the battle plans very between the British and the Americans? Hide and seek! Imagine you are a centimeter tall. Find a hiding spot in this photograph. From your hiding spot write down: what you see, hear, smell, touch, taste?

  3. Objective • Students will be able to compare and contrast the battle plans of the British and the Patriots as fighting moves South as evidenced by completed Cornell Notes and summaries with 80% accuracy • Where does today’s objective fit into our unit learning goal for levels 2 and 3? • What is the differencein difficulty or complexity between levels 2 and 3 for our objective today?

  4. Why does this objective matter? • After the American victory at Saratoga (turkey call!), the British threat to New England had ended. Phew! But, the British reevaluate their battle plans and next try to win the war by invading and capturing the South. Will this attempt fail as well?!!!

  5. 1. British War Plan • British War Strategy- • Stop the rebellion of Massachusetts • Divide and conquer at NY, isolate New England • Maintain the South using the loyalists and then move North recapturing one state after another FAIL FAIL

  6. 2. American War Plan • Toss European rules of warfare out the window • Use guerilla warfare and use scorched earth (burn everything) • Survive and drag the war out for as long as possible

  7. 3. Fighting moves South • Battle at Savannah Dec. 29, 1778- Britishwin the siege on Savannah • May 12 1780- British win at Charleston • Aug 16, 1780-British win at Camden • At first the British plan seemed to be working

  8. 4. North Carolina • British Lord Cornwallis carried the war into North Carolina • To slow their advance the Americans used guerilla warfare or fighters who work in small bands in hit and run attacks. • American Francis Marion led his men through swamps to attack without warning.

  9. 5. Battle at Cowpens Jan. 17, 1781 • American Gen. Daniel Morgan was thinking outside the box • He stationed two groups of militia next to the river in Cowpens • There was one road in and one road out running along the river • Sharpshooters were positioned in trees to take out British generals (That’s a No-No)

  10. 5. Cowpens I will not accept surrender! • Trying to take out British General Banastre Tarleton (bloody Ban the Butcher, never accepted surrender). • His troops were deadly with the bayonets • Tarleton troops march up the road they are picked off by the sharpshooters. • The first group of militia men fire then retreat so Tarleton meets constant lines of fire • Morgan defeats the Butcher, and the British reevaluate their situation.

  11. 6. Why wasn’t Benedict with Daniel Morgan? • Traitor!!! • He gave up West Point, a key American fort • When his plot was discovered in Sept. of 1780 he escaped to the South • He most likely betrayed America because he was angry about his lack of recognition and other officers were promoted ahead of him • After the revolution he moved to England with his wife where he was rejected socially…he never got the fame and fortune he desired

  12. Summary and Evaluations • SUMMARIZE why the British battle plans failed to earn them victories in the South. Summarize in one paragraph at the bottom of your Cornell Notes • Complete your progress chart for objective H • With the test coming next week, what can you do at home to increase your understanding of our objectives?
