What is Service Learning?
  • StFX Service Learning is considered the pioneer for Service Learning in Canada.
  • Service Learning is an innovative way to integrate experiential learning, academic study, and community service.

  • Students travel in groups to diverse communities in Canada and abroad.
  • While being immersed in the local culture, students:
    • provide service with community organizations,
    • visit sites of historic and political importance, and
    • participate in education sessions led by local community leaders.

Breaking the Silence

Focus: Community development, peace building after years of civil war, Fair Trade coffee, human rights, and the Mayan culture

Service Placements:

Small rural coffee farms, school project

Leader: Greg Carter (Music)

Host: L’Arche Ottawa

Focus: Living and working with adults who have developmental disabilities and those who wish to share life with them

Service Placements:

Living and assisting in L’Arche homes in Ottawa

Service Learning staff, hosts and faculty leaders assist participants:

prepare for the experience,

observe and reflect throughout the experience, and

reflect and debrief following the experience.

IDS 305: Immersion Service Learning
  • Participants may choose a credit or non-credit option. You are not required to register in a course.
  • IDS 305 is a 3-credit course offered in the winter term.

This course engages the student in a major research project on a topic related to their immersion experience.

  • DEVS 311 and BIOL 391 also have ISL academic assignments.

Bursaries are available!

You must complete and submit a Bursary Application; bursaries up to $1,250 are awarded based on financial need.

Bursary Workshop: Wed, Oct 8, 5:15pm Coady 242

Deadline: 4pm, Friday, October 17th.






Participants often fundraise all or most of the fees, fundraising may be done individually, in groups, or both.
