Assignment4 (Data collection & analysis) • Interesting papers; examples of topics: GMAT, Valio products, hipster fashion, online annual reports, change communication, visual communication tools, Corporate Communication Master’s • PLUSes: • exact reportingvs. description; compare: ”what comes to...”, ” I liked..” , ”some people thought ..” vs. ”three categories emerged from the data”; ”content analysis was used to analyze..” • reference to and use of course material (to show that you know!) • use of figures, quotes

Assignment 2 (Study Circle) • 5 reports on Eskola & Suoranta, 3 reports on Paltridge; again, interesting reading and aims achieved Highest grades (three groups) : • instructions followed (critical summaries with questions; memos that reported the discussion; true reflection) • valid points raised • clear presentation (reader-friendly!) Overall, VERY WELL DONE!!

  4. Writing a Research Plan • Introduction • Literature Review (or included in the Introduction) • Methodology • Discussion

Introduction • Set the scene: frame the problem, provide context, (define key concepts) • Consider the title: informative but catchy! • Motivate the plan, define your niche • Discuss the importance of the topic (why should it be studied?) • Show your ‘niche’; convince your reader ! • Formulate research problems and possibly research questions • Discuss the nature of the phenomenon to be studied • Based on the discussion, indicate the problem area, or come up with direct research questions

Literature Review • show that you’re familiar with earlier work in the area, demonstrate your understanding of the issues When writing: • have your project and your audience in mind (= your voice!) • avoid the “she said/he said” problem (= synthesize!) • distinguish fact from opinion: • Smith (1999) argues that…. • Smith (1999) found that… • structure the review (paragraphs, topic sentences, connecting words (IBC Thesis Guide at https://noppa.aalto.fi/noppa/kurssi/75e99902/materials)

  7. Methodology 1(2) Present sufficient information for the reader to determine that the methodology chosen is sound, and the most valid way to address the research problem. • Discuss methodological choices • Select the method that will best answer your questions • Explain why you chose this specific method

  8. Methodology 2(2) Plan and explain data collection and analysis • In concrete terms (what? where ? how many? when?), describe how you will collect the data • Indicate how you will (at least start to) analyze the data

  9. Discussion • discuss the plan and anticipate results • once again: convince the reader • the area is important ! • you know about the problem area and about previous studies! • you know about suitable methods to study this ! Finally, check that you have answered the following : • What do you plan to accomplish ? • Why do you want to do this ? • How are you going to do it ?
