  1. Learn Indonesian In Indonesia, the language is called “bahasa Indonesia” (the language of Indonesia). The word bahasa (language) is written in small letters as it is not part of the name of the language. It is hence wrong to refer to the language as “Bahasa Indonesian”, or, even worse, “Bahasa”.

  2. What Is Indonesian Indonesian belongs to the Austronesian language family which extends across the islands of Southeast Asia and the Pacific. Other languages in this family include Malagasy, Javanese , Balinese, Tagalog or Filipino and Maori.

  3. Indonesian Native Speakers The number of native speakers of the Indonesian language is generally underestimated. An extreme case is Ethnologue which until recently maintained that the Indonesian language has 23 million native speakers.

  4. How Many People Speak Indonesia According to Ethnologue, Indonesian is a small language. It is alleged that only 23 million Indonesians speak bahasa Indonesia whereas Malay is said to have 39 million speakers.
