  2. Overview • The Battle of Stalingrad took place from 1942-1943.(1) • The Battle of Stalingrad is know to have started on July 17, 1942.(1) • The Battle of Leningrad took place from 1941-1944.(2)

  3. Who? The Battle of Stalingrad was between the Soviet Union and Germany.(4) The Battle of Leningrad was between Soviet Union and Germany as well.(4)

  4. What? • Both Stalingrad and Leningrad where Battles of World War 2.(4) • The first German artillery shell fell on Leningrad on September 1st, 1941.(2)

  9. Significance to the War • Germany did not achieve there main objective to conquering the Soviet Union. (3) • 1942 Hitler narrowed his sights and concentrated his armies in southern Russia. (3) • With Hitler’s new goal he wants to control the rich Caucasus oil fields, to achieve this, he would have to capture the city of Stalingrad. (3)

  10. FYI • Over 200,000 Germans were killed by fighting or by hungry in the battle of Stalingrad.(4) • By the end of the siege, some 632,000 people are thought to have died with nearly 4,000 people from Leningrad starving to death on Christmas Day, 1941.(4)
