  4. Underdog Victory • Many Northerners thought this war would be over within a few months • Civilians even picnicked along the battlefield! • South pulled a surprising victory, foreshadowing the possibility of a longer war • Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson earns his nickname

  5. Battle of Shiloh(Pittsburg Landing)

  6. A new star? • Ulysses S. Grant emerges as a new Union commander • major battle victory for the North in the West • Gave them access to Northern Mississippi River

  8. Battle of the Future • Battle between two ships that are modern marvels/never used before • Early look into future battles between battleships

  9. Battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg)

  10. Goals have changed • Bloodiest day in American history • Both sides see massive casualties • Emancipation Proclamation tied to a Union “victory” • Northerners could rally around ending slavery • Eliminating slave labor hurts the southern economy • Halts any chance of foreign aid for south from nations needing their cotton (especially G.B.)

  12. Southern Slaughter • Burnside wanted to cross the Rappahannock River to attack Confederates • Delay in receiving pontoon boats slowed Union • South prepared behind a wall on the top of a hill • Union soldiers repeatedly charged uphill, taking heavy casualties • video

  14. Turning Point • Searching for relief of southern fields, Lee heads North • Searches for shoes in central PA • J.E.B. Stuart, Lee’s eyes, off making a name for himself leads to CSA and USA bumping into one another • 3 day battle ensues • Two key points: • Joshua Chamberlain • Pickett’s Charge

Remember Fredericksburg • Chamberlain • Calls for a downhill charge to save the end of the Union line • Pickett’s Charge • Confederate charge of over a mile of open land • Had to cross fenced road that slowed march as well • Union ready behind a rock wall, force heavy casualties • “Sir, I have no division”

  17. Wait it out • Siege- surround an enemy and hold supplies, etc from them • Vicksburg was the last Southern stronghold on the Mississippi River • Huge victory for the Grant and Union only a day after Gettysburg

  18. Sherman’s March to the Sea

  19. Total Warfare • Sherman cuts a path through Georgia to the Atlantic Ocean • Total war-destroying cities, crops, and any supplies the south could use • Burns the city of Atlanta to the ground
