Sports • Sports can be defined as any activity that gives enjoyment or recreation. • Sports can be played outdoors or indoors. • Outdoor sports are: golf, skiing, climbing, marathon-running, hiking, horse riding, rallies, sledging and some aquatic sports such as windsurfing. • Indoor sports are: table-tennis, gymnastic, boxing or wrestling, chess. • Some sports which could be played both indoor and outdoor are: tennis, ball games(basketball, voleyball) or ice-hockey.

  4. The most favourite sports in the USA. • American football • Baseball • Basketball • Ice-Hockey

  5. American Football • In the USA football- is the most popularsport. • Its history started in 19 century in England. In 1920, in the USA, there were already 10 professional teams.In the USA were two divisions NFL and AFL, which joined to one and it resulted in NFL division.NFL was devided into two divisions.

Baseball • In the second place among sports which people like to watch or play is Baseball. • Baseball does not come from cricket,as many people think.Baseball comes from Baseball.Baseball is very popular in the USA as an informal, neighbourhood sport.More than one American remembers the time when he or she hit a baseball through a neighbour´s window(nice neighbours return the ball...).

  7. The best player in history was Sadaru Oh. • The professional games started in 1869.Now it is played in more than 120 countries.

  8. Basketball • The first basketball game was played in Springfield in 1891.It was invented by an American named James Naismith .It was invented at a YMCA as a game that would fill an empty period between the football season (autumn) and the baseball season (spring and summer). And today, NBA games are shown on TV in over 90 countries around the world.

  9. The best players were Michael Jordan and „magic“ Johnson.

  10. Ice-Hockey • Among „four major sports“(baseball, football and basketball) there is also an ice-hockey. • The development of an ice-hockey began in North America.It started to be played by Indians but later immigrants changed it to today’s form.

  11. The best hockey player was Bobby Orr. He won twice Stenley cup, twice Conn Smythe, three times Hard Tropy and twice Art Ross.

  12. One of other team sports is Lacrosse • Lacrosse is a team sport of Native American origin. Although it is not a very popular sport nationwide, it is quite popular in mid-Atlantic and New England states and is increasing in national popularity. NLL and MLL are the national box and outdoor lacrosse leagues.

  13. There are many other sports and activities in America which attract millions of active participants. Among them are golf, swimming, tennis, marathons, track and field, bowling, archery, skiing, skating, squash, badminton, rowing, sailing, weight-lifting, boxing, wrestling. • Around 40 percent of all Americans take part in some athletic activity once a day.
