  4. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) • About .03% of the atmosphere • Sources • Respiration • Burning • Decomposition • Enters plant leaf through stomate

  5. Water (H2O) • Enters the plant root system (root hairs) by osmosis • Travels through xylem from the roots to the leaves • Transpiration- evaporation of water from leaves

  6. Energy • Light- small portion of the EM spectrum • ROY G. BIV • Blue, Violet, Red used most by leaf

  7. Chloroplasts • Photosynthetic organelles found in certain leaf cells, contains the pigments

  8. Primary Pigments • Visible during the growing seasons • chlorophyll a- green • chlorophyll b- green

  9. Secondary Pigments • Not visible during the growing season • Hidden by the primary pigments • Become visible in the fall of the year

  10. Secondary Pigments • Carotenoids • Carotene- orange • Xanthophyll-yellow • Anthocyamin- red

  11. Chloroplast Structure • Grana- stack of tiny discs, contain the chlorophyll • light reactions take place here, light is required

  14. Glucose (C6H12O6) • Formed in the chloroplasts • Transported through vessels called phloem • Stored as carbohydrates in roots, stems, leaves, fruit, seeds, etc
