Social workers are college-educated, highly skilled professionals with bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. • We view our clients from a holistic, “person-in-environment”perspective that assesses their significant relationships, economic and social conditions, physical and mental health issues, and how they function within their broader community.

  6. Did You Know? • Social work was established as a profession over 100 years ago. • Social workers provide more mental health services in the U.S. than psychologists, psychiatrists, and psychiatric nurses combined.

Did You Know? • CareerCast.com ranked social work #52 out of the top 200 “Best Jobs” for 2010. • The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that the need for social workers is expected to grow twice as fast as any other profession over the next 20 years – especially in the areas of gerontology, health care, substance abuse, schools, and private therapy offices.

  8. Did You Know? • Social work programs that are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and offer degrees that are nationally recognized for their rigorous standards and ongoing evaluation. • In Florida, the title “Social Worker” is Legislatively protected.

  10. FSU’s College of Social Work Began in 1949 and offers three levels of degrees: • B.S.W. • M.S.W. • Ph.D.

  11. FSU’s College of Social Work • We offer a “MINOR in SOCIAL WELFARE” at the undergraduate level – 13 hours. • We have a LIMITED ACCESS BSW 50 credit hour program. • Completing a BSW makes you eligible to apply for an Advanced Standing MSW program (39 credits).

  12. Our MSW Program has Two Concentration Areas Clinical Social Work Prepares students to assess, diagnose, and treat client problems through individual, couple, family, and group therapy. Social Policy and Administration (SPA) Prepares students for leadership in policy or administrative positions in public and private social agencies serving diverse populations.

Program • M.S.W./M.S. in Criminology and Criminal Justice • M.S.W./M.B.A. • Child Welfare Practice Certificate (BSW/MSW) • Leadership in Executive and Administrative Development (L.E.A.D.) in Social Work Certificate (MSW) • Certificate in Gerontology (BSW/MSW) • Arts and Community Practice Specialized Studies (BSW/MSW) • Family Social Work Practice Specialized Studies (MSW)

The MSW Curriculum • Advanced Standing (39 hours) • For students with a BSW from a • CSWE accredited institution • Entry every semester • One clinical internship = 512 hours • Full-time and part-time students Traditional (61 hours) • For students with undergraduate degrees other than social work • Admission in Fall of each year • Two internships: #1 = 432 hours #2 = 512 hours • Full-time or part-time students

  16. Alumni Survey: Was it a good decision to get an MSW degree? YES! 93% of our MSW graduates said it was a good decision to get the degree. 92% said they would recommend the FSU College of Social Work to others.

  17. Tips for Applying to the MSW Program • Have a strong undergraduate GPA. • Obtain relevant work and/or volunteer experience. • Familiarize yourself with the social work profession. • Take a professional approach to the application. • Prepare for the GRE.
