Statistics in the Czech Republic • Almost 60 % of girls aged 15 – 19 are not happy with their bodies. • Only about 14 % of girls aged 15 – 19 don’t wish to lose weight. • About 10 % of young girls consider vomiting as a way to lose weight. • An average Czech woman is 165 cm tall and weights 69 kilos. An average modelis 180 cm tall and weights 54 kilos.

Anorexia nervosa - history • NOT a new illness– historical records show people suffered from anorexia in the past • Empress Elizabeth of Austria – Sissy (19th century) • 172 cm tall, weighed 43 -50 kilos • Obsessed about her body weight • Didn’t eat much, sometimes drank only fruit juice or milk, or raw beef juice stirred into a thin soup • Practised “tight-lacing” in corsets

Anorexia nervosa • Dramatic weight loss – BMI less than 17,5 • Fear of putting up weight • Thinking “I’m so fat.” (not having realistic image about own body) • Refusal to eat some types of food • Eating tiny portions • Very often checking weight (few times a day) • Drastic dieting, excessive exercising

Anorexia nervosa – medical consequences • starving = loss of essential nutrients for the body = body’s processes slow down • body weight = under normal • girls = loss of menstruation • very low blood pressure • dehydration – risk of kidney failure • weakness, fainting, extreme tiredness, dizziness • feeling very cold • dry skin and hair, hair loss, bad skin condition, nails break easily • osteoporosis – bones break easily • tooth decay • problems with getting pregnant • death risk A hand of a 46-year-old anorexic woman

  9. Anorexia nervosa – mental consequences • not being able to concentrate • easy to be annoyed • depressions • neurosis • tearful • hot-tempered

  10. Occurrence • 95 % women • Usually young girls (12 – 18) • Developed countries • Media – the cult of being thin

  14. Treatment of anorexia • restore the weight • psychological treatment • long-term process • care team: specialist counsellor, psychiatrist, psychologist, nurse, dietician, paediatrician

Bulimia nervosa - history • Ancient Romans used make themselves vomit to continue in eating during opulent feasts • In 1979 Bernard Russeldescribed Bulimia as a specific symptom of Anorexia (some anorexic people also binge eat and vomit) • In 1987 – independent diagnosis (no longer a part of Anorexia)

  16. Bulimia nervosa - symptoms • binge eating episodes • vomiting, use of laxatives • relatively “normal” weight • distorted body image • hard to recognize • frequent weighing • odd eating habits • excessive exercise

  20. Binge eating - symptoms • eating large quantities of food even if not hungry • rapid weight gain • disgust and shame after overeating • trying a lot of different diets • feeling out of control about food • food is a treat, a way to battle stress
