Demonstrate after reading understanding and interpretation of fiction. -Make, and support with evidence, assertions about texts. -Identify themes, settings, characters, and ideas 1.2 LEARNING TO READ IN ALL CONTENT AREAS (MEDIA LITERACY) B. Use and understand a variety of media and evaluate the quality of material produced. - Explain how the techniques used in electronic media modify traditional forms of discourse for different purposes. - Use, design and develop a media project to demonstrate understanding of the short story. 1.3 READING, ANALYZING, AND INTERPRETING LITERATURE A. Read and understand works of literature. B. Analyze the relationships, uses and effectiveness of literary elements used by one or more authors in similar genres including characterization, setting, plot, theme, point of view, tone, and style. C. Analyze effectiveness, in terms of literary quality, the author’s use of: -Literary structures (e.g., foreshadowing, flashbacks, progressive and digressive time). 1.6 SPEAKING AND LISTENING A. Listen to others. -Ask clarifying questions. -Synthesize information, ideas and opinions to determine relevancy. B. Speak using skills appropriate to formal speech situations. C. Contribute to discussions. E. Participate in small and large group discussions and presentations. F. Use media for learning purposes. -Use various forms of media to elicit information, to make a student presentation and to complete class assignments and projects. -Create a multi-media (e.g., film, music, computer-graphic) presentation for display or transmission that demonstrates an understanding of a specific topic or issue or teaches others about it.

PROJECT SUPERNOVA • An adaptation that 1) retells assigned short story by combining the arts of group members and 2) does not rely heavily on written or spoken English. • A written report that 1) communicates the group’s analysis and interpretation of plot, setting, character, theme of original story and 2) records creative process/artistic decisions group made in creating the adaptation • A presentation
