The NASA E/PO Program at Sonoma State University Fermi • A group of eight people working collaboratively to educate the public about current and future NASA high energy astrophysics/astronomy missions. • Led by Prof. Lynn Cominsky Swift GLAST XMM-Newton
What is Fermi? • GLAST: Gamma-Ray Large Area Space Telescope • Launched June 11 2008 • GLAST has two instruments: • Large Area Telescope (LAT) • GLAST Burst Monitor (GBM) • GLAST is looking at many different objects within the energy range of 10keV to 300GeV. • Has found proverbially tons of Gamma Sources LAT GBM
Forms at tables • NASA Eval • NASA Sign-up Sheet • Activity Two Worksheets
Stellar evolution made simple Bless You! 0.077 ~8 Mo Bang! ~8 ~20 Mo HECKUVA BANG! ~20 ~100 Mo Stars like the Sun go gentle into that good night More massive stars rage, rage against the dying of the light
NASA Supernova Guide • 4 student-centric activities
Trivia Prize 1 • NASA Fermi Game Cards! • What planet did Voyager II land on? • NONE! Like the Energizer Bunny, it’s still going & going &…
Act 3 : Pulsars • Magnetic fields and rotations • Fields in 2-D
Act 3 : Pulsars • Magnetic fields and rotations • Fields in 3-D
Act 4 : Neutron Stars in the News • Student research extension
Act 2 : Crawl of the Crab • How old is the Crab Nebula? • In this activity, you will take simple measurements to find out. • But a little background 1st…
Trivia Prize 2 • NASA Freeze-dried Ice-Cream! • Name all the states (US) with monosyllabic names? • Maine
What is the Crab? • Nebula formed when original star exploded in 1054 AD. But, how do we know that, Mr. Wizard? • Visible in daytime for weeks! • Visible at night for months! • Pulsar found at center in 1968 • 16 km wide (10 mi) • 500,000 Mearth • Spins 30 Hz in X-Rays • 6000 ly away
Navaho Canyon and White Mesa (both AZ, found 1953-54 by William C. Miller)
Crawl of the Crab • Look at the images of the Crab Nebula • One taken in 1956 • One in 1999 • Notice anything?
Crawl of the Crab • Central pulsar labeled • From that point, measure to other reference points accurately; nearest 0.05cm
Trivia Prize 3 • Set of 2 Newton 4-poster sets! • Which contiguous state (US) contains the northernmost geographic point? • Minnesota
So, activity synopsis… • Measure differences • Chart differences • Calculate age
