  1. GS1 Industry & Standards EventSept 27-1 Oct 2010 – AmsterdamCreating value together with global standards AIDC Strategic Initiatives/Development Planning 1105 to 1125 CET Greg Rowe Hosted by

  2. Introduction • AIDC has many open projects with different status • Some approved with work underway • Some approved and just beginning • Some not yet approved and need detailed review • Prioritization with Healthcare IUG near completion • Review and prioritization needed with the Retail IUG • To compare priorities • To determine phasing of the activities • To remove projects that are not a high priority for the GS1 community

  3. Strategic AIDC Initiatives • Background: • GO worked with Healthcare and Retail Focus Groups to prioritize and clarify issues (previously 14 initiatives) • Research: • POS Technology Gap • AIDC 2020 Planning • Divergence: • GTIN-14 @ POS • GTIN-14 significance • Deployment: • GS1 DataBar • GS1 DataMatrix Project launched under “old” process but retail priorities to be confirmed for the initiatives versus other projects in order to develop SBNs.

  4. Fresh Foods • Background: • 2010 Deliverables • GTIN Rules for Fresh Foods • GS1 AIDC Application Standards for loose produce and variable measure fresh foods sold at POS • AIDC Implementation Guidelines • 2011 Proposals • Metro suggestion for “step by step”, “technology by technology” guideline expanding beyond AIDC to GDSN and connecting to traceability • GS1 Ireland suggestion we work to improve readiness of printing and packaging industry including bar code design SW to support new data and carriers

  5. Human Readable Interpretation • Background: • HRI provides a redundancy to AIDC technology when it fails • HRI Phase 1 is near completion • HRI Phase 2 needs prioritization and scope includes: • Address questions on how to implement HRI for EPC RFID tag while ensuring compatibility with GS1 Bar Code rules • Set rules for the spacing in the HRI to make key entry faster and more accurate (similar to phone number conventions) • Cross sector review of healthcare decision tree concept for replacing HRI with other text on the label or package • AG suggestion that GS1 should develop HRI Guideline Healthcare prioritization is near completion on Phase 2 (items 1-3) but not 4 as the AG suggestion came after the HC IUG prioritization..

  6. Technology Integration • Background: • Bar Code-EPC Interoperability Standards Development Group • Create a standards based solution to ensure GS1 bar codes and EPC work together seamlessly • Managing Multiple Bar Codes (MMBC) • Goal is to support retail, healthcare, and mobile com requirements using as few AIDC data and data carriers as possible to eliminate confusion for humans and slow performance for scanners • General Specifications-Tag Data Standards Alignment • Develop an integrated approach to publication and maintenance of the Tag Data Standards with the General Specifications

  7. Coupon Initiatives • Global Coupon Solution • Proposal of GS1 in Europe to use GS1 DataBar and a global coupon identifier to support electronic clearing concept to assure fast and accurate treatment of coupon data to increase accuracy, reduce fraud, etc. • Mobile Coupon • Create the standards to support reading / scanning / presenting coupons via Mobile Devices • Reduced Size GS1 DataBar Coupon • Research the potential to reduce the minimum size of GS1 POS bar codes while maintaining acceptable read rates to support a reduced packaging ‘footprint’ of the bar code

  8. Standards Development Efforts • 2D Bar Code Quality Reports • Create standards based 2D bar code quality reports that are reciprocally used across companies and countries to ensure results of one company or country are accepted in another to eliminate cost or delay • GTIN Rules violations analysis & then change (CR 09-218 from J&J) • Expand GTIN use for variable measure trade items at POS beyond Fresh Foods (e.g. DIY) • AIDC Application Standard: Returnable Transport Item • AG recommendation to move the existing guideline to a standard to increase confidence for adoption for returnable transport item (reusable pallets, totes) • AIDC Application Standard: Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) • AG recommendation to move the existing guideline to a standard to increase confidence for adoption

  9. Serialization Efforts • Serial # Replacement SDG (Book Industry) • Solutions phase following requirements. Input from the book industry but could extend further. GS1 Healthcare will not allow this practice. • AIDC Standard: Serial Number Allocation Rule • Guidelines to assist users with the assignment of serial numbers including directions on: Use of leading zeros ; Non-significance of the serial number; Alpha-numeric versus numeric serial number • GS1 Services: Serialization Services • Deliver an overview of the services GS1 could consider to provide in context of serialization (e.g., web services facilitating the management of serialization for End Users)
