  1. Welcome! • Why a “Walk-In” Key Messages

  2. The Appropriations Act of 2013 (“budget bill”) includes legislation that eliminates career status, i.e. employment protections for educators. As of August, 2013 no local board may grant career status. Teachers who were in the pipeline to earn career status are denied the opportunity and forced into one-year contracts until 2018. All school administrators will lose their career status and be placed on contracts in 2014. Educators with career status will have two options for employment during the 2014-2018 school years: (1) maintain their career status or (2) accept a 4 year contract relinquishing career status for a $500 annual bonus for each year of the four year contract. Only 25% of all educators on the teacher salary scale will be offered a 4 year contract. In 2018, career status will be eliminated for all educators and employment will be based on 1-, 2-, or 4- year contracts.
