  1. Resumes . . . Continued

  2. Extras we didn’t cover last time . . . • A resume should be limited to one page • Be creative! You may use the format you prefer. There is no one way to do this! • Use white or off-whit colored paper. Use professional resume paper. Print it in black ink. Oh, and use a specialized printer to print your resume! I always go to Kinkos. • Although you can be creative, do not use colored paper like Elle from Legally Blonde. Avoid using special graphics as well UNLESS it is appropriate for the job in which you are applying.

  3. Experience • Last time, we talked a bit about the “Experience” section of a resume. Let’s review. What should this include? • You will need at least two one-line descriptions of what your job duties and responsibilities were. Begin with an action verb and do not use “I” in your descriptions.

  4. Here is an example of a description LA QUINTA HIGH SCHOOL January 2000 - Present La Quinta, CA Math Teacher • Developed and taught activity based, cooperative learning units • Participated in team teaching lessons with other faculty • Evaluated school progress toward meeting the California Standardized Tests.

  5. Work with the person next to you to… • Create experience descriptions for the following (one set of at least 2 for each): • Secretary • Fashion Designer • Tattoo Artist

  6. Activities • Let’s talk about activities again. Descriptions for activities are going to look fairly similar to those of your experience section. For example: The School of Arts and Enterprise August 2011 - 2014 Associated Student Body President • Managed class activities • Recruited volunteers and chaperones for school events • Scheduled weekly meetings between class officers • Coordinated spirit week activities

  7. Now, create a description for each of the following . . . • Soccer player • Environmental Club member • Dance Team member

  8. Okay, now let’s talk references . . . • What two types of references should you have on your resume? • 1. People who can speak well about your work ethic • 2. People who can speak well about your character • What should you do before listing someone as your reference either on a job application or a reference • Now fill in your reference page
