  2. Company History 1899-Sprint Founder Cleyson Brown begins the Brown Telephone Co. Sprint is based in Overland Park Kansas. The company owns and operates the third largest wireless telecommunications network in United States, with 48.1 million customers, behind Verizon Wireless and AT&T. Sprint is ranked 67 by Fortune 500.
  3. CEO Dan Hesse New CEO In December of 2007. CEO of Embarq Corporation From 2000 - 2004, CEO of Terabeam Corporation From 1997 - 2000, he served as the President and CEO of AT&T Wireless Services Hesse launched AT&T's global online initiatives Included the AT&T Worldnet family of internet services, as the leader of the Online Services Group. From 1991-1995, he was based in the Netherlands serving as the President and CEO of AT&T Network Systems International A joint-venture telecommunications technology company with revenues of $2 billion. He also held prior AT&T management assignments in Network Operations, Network Engineering, International Services, Human Resources, Strategic Planning, Product Management and Sales.

Master of science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Masters degree in business administration, with distinction, from Cornell University Bachelor of arts degree, with honors, from the University of Notre Dame. Wireless Industry "Person of the Year" by RCR magazine "Executive of the Year" by Wireless Business and Technology magazine "Most Influential Person in Mobile Technology" by LAPTOP Magazine Wireless Week magazine's Leadership Award. Recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. He also serves on the board of directors of Clearwire Corporation National Board of Governors of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.
  5. The Crisis – Sprint and Nextel Merger When Sprint Nextel CEO Dan Hesse joined the wireless company last December, he inherited a backlog of problems. Among them: The logistical nightmare of managing two different networks formed by Sprint's merger with Nextel. High rate of subscriber defections. Horrible reputation for customer service.
  6. The crisis began by writing off $30 billion related to the 2005 acquisition Sprint lost Nextel customers by letting network quality lapse. The company never focused on one clear marketing strategy.

  8. Dan Hesse’s approach to the Crisis Fixing the customer service issue the number one priority. Working together cross-functionally to address all of the "pain points" in the customer experience. He hopes that unlimited service contracts and a national WiMAX network will help stop the bleeding. He cut 8,000 jobs. Closed many retail stores. Acquired the fast-growing prepaid phone operator Virgin Mobile USA. Has employed aggressive pricing to pursue the youth market. Data is a growing market.
