  1. Aluminum 6061-T6 • Christian Bushnell • Joshua Higgins • Eric Lemont • Harold Mason • Christopher Michaud • Josh Quint

  2. Presentation Format • Climbing Cams • Examine Trigger • Material Selection • Aluminum 6061-T6 Properties • How it is made? • Other applications

  3. Climbing Cams • Cams are inserted in crevices while climbing and act as holds • They are an environmentally friendly alternative to punching holes

  4. Trigger • Function- Beam with distributed load and two point loads • Objective- High strength, low cost • Constraints- High fracture toughness, low density

  5. Examining Graphs • Strength vs. Relative cost • Factoring in fracture toughness aluminum alloys come out on top

  6. 1000 Series • 99% pure aluminum • Weak • Good conductor • Ductile • Aluminum foil

  7. 2000 Series • 4% Copper • Poor corrosion resistance • Used in aircraft and rivets

  8. 3000 Series • 1% Manganese • Ductile • Corrosion resistant • Used in roofing panel and cookware

  9. 4000 Series • Aluminum plus Silicon • Low melting point • Used in welding wire

  10. 5000 Series • 3% Magnesium plus 0.5% Manganese • Strong • Able to be work hardened • Resistant to corrosion in a marine atmosphere • Used in cans

  11. 6000 Series • Aluminum plus Magnesium and Manganese • Good Formability • Corrosion resistant • Medium strength • 6061 is the most versitile

  12. 7000 Series • Aluminum plus 6% zinc, Magnesium and Manganese • Very strong • Used in aircraft

  13. Aluminum 6061-T6 • Composition Copper 0.15% to 0.4 % Silicon 0.4% to 0.8% Iron 0.7% Manganese 0.15% Magnesium 0.8% to 1.2% Zinc 0.25% Chromium 0.4% to 0.35% Titanium 0.15%

  14. Properties • Density = 2.7g/cm^3 • Ultimate Tensile Strength = 310 Mpa • Tensile Yield Strength = 275 Mpa • Elongation at break = 12% • Modulus of Elasticity = 69 Gpa • Melting Point = 582C to 652C • Fatigue strength = 95 Mpa • Fracture Toughness = 29 Mpa x m^.5 • Poisson’s Ratio = 0.33

  15. How it is made • Aluminum and alloying elements are mixed at high temperatures • Aged for 8 hours at 350 F then air cooled, this is what makes it T-6 tempered

  16. Other Applications • Bar ends • Bicycle sprockets

  17. Other Applications • Knifes • Rims
