  1. RELATIONSHIPS MATTER Agency Relationships and Partnerships in the Community Impact United Way An Overview Q & A with Brian Gallagher President and CEO United Way of America

  2. RELATIONSHIPS MATTER “United Way is not going through these changes because we’re looking to make life difficult for folks, but because the world is changing.” Brian Gallagher • United Ways have been viewed solely as • funders in the past. • Today, they are redefining their purpose • as “improving people’s lives and mobilizing • resources to achieve community results.” • Changing perception to achieve impact.

  3. RELATIONSHIPS MATTER Some agencies will align with the issues and won’t be affected. Others may not align with the issues. “If you are looking for it to essentially be an exchange of unrestricted money, it probably won’t occur.” Brian Gallagher BSA started the first national endowment program in 1993…10 years ago…and has continued to focus on endowment as an alternative source of funding for Scouting’s future.

  4. RELATIONSHIPS MATTER “The fact is everybody is out raising their own money right now. The days of the United Way campaign providing a vast majorityof funding for any agency are long gone.” Brian Gallagher “There’s no reason why agencies that align with community’s agendas might not end up receiving more money in funding.” Brian Gallagher

  5. RELATIONSHIPS MATTER 2004 National Agenda United Way of America (not local United Way communities agenda) Early Childhood Development 2-11 Dialing System to Health and Human Services Community Preparedness Housing Health-Care Access • 2004 BSA National Good Turn for America focus on shelter, food, health. • 2004 BSA Emergency Preparedness collaboration with USA Department of Homeland Security.

  6. RELATIONSHIPS MATTER • BSA needs to show diversity and inclusiveness • in United Way presentations. Scouting programs • serving Hispanic, Asian, Native Americans, and • African American populations can be relevant. • Show how BSA supports youth with special needs in • underserved neighborhoods of their communities. • Use United Way and educational language, not that of the BSA. “Outcomes also relate to specific populations within the community.” Brian Gallagher

  7. United Ways are positioned as community foundations with special interests, and not as fund raisers for all agencies. • BSA councils have to apply for allocations, similar to asking for a grant. Funding is no longer automatic, as in the past. • United Ways that do not meet their fund raising goals or disagree with BSA policies will decrease or eliminate allocations to councils. RELATIONSHIPS MATTER BSA PERSPECTIVES AND CONCLUSIONS

  8. RELATIONSHIPS MATTER “BE PREPARED” SOLUTIONS Continue FOS campaigns for increased giving. Continue to secure endowment gifts. Promote donor designations. Follow the United Way strategies listed in this elective.
