U.S. Constitution • The U.S. Constitution is a legal document filled with details about the laws of the U.S. • George Washington was the leader for the writing of the Constitution • James Madison was the “Father of the Constitution” • Ben Franklin was known for his common sense, scientific thoughts, and as a peacemaker which was used in writing the Constitution

  3. The Bill of Rights • The Bill of Rights is the first 10 Amendments to the Constitution • These rights were added to the Constitution to ensure that the national government would not be able to take away the basic freedom of people in 1791

  4. The Legislative Branch • The Legislative Branch passes the laws • It can override the president’s veto • Approves treaties and presidential appt. • Prints and coins money • Can declare war • Appropriates money • Is the Congress

  5. The Executive Branch • The Executive Branch carries out the laws • It can veto laws • Negotiates foreign treaties • Serves as commander in chief of the armed forces • Can grant pardons to federal offenders • Is the President

  6. The Judicial Branch • The Judicial Branch interprets the laws • Can declare laws unconstitutional • Can declare executive actions unconstitutional • Is the Supreme Court and other Federal Courts

  7. Separation of Powers • To prevent any one branch from gaining too much power, the delegates set up a system that divides power among three branches of government • No one branch has supreme authority

  8. Checks and Balances • To keep one branch from overstepping its powers, the Constitution set up a system of checks and balances • Each branch help to check the actions of the others

  9. The Preamble • The Preamble is a brief introductory statement of the fundamental purposes and guiding principles that the Constitution is meant to serve. • The Preamble only serves as an opening to the rest of the Constitution, it doesn’t assign powers to the federal government

  10. Constitutional Convention • The Constitutional Convention took place in the year of 1787 in the State House in Philadelphia • For four months, 55 delegates from the several states met to frame a Constitution for a federal republic that would last into “remote futurity”

  11. Judicial Review • The Supreme Court has power of Judicial Review which allows Court to review all laws made in the United States • The goal of the Judicial Review is to decide if the government laws are constitutional

  12. The Articles of Confederation • In 1781 Congress adopted a plan of government called the Articles of Confederation. • It was the first “constitution” or written plan of government for the United States.

  13. Federal System of Government • In the Federal System of Government, State Government and National Government was combined to form the Federal System of Government

  14. George Washington and the Constitution • George Washington was a delegate from Virginia at the Constitutional Convention • He had many great ideas for the Constitution, that is partly why the Constitution was created as a strong central government
