  1. CCT 370: Introduction to Computer Visualization Lecture 9: Welcome Guests! CCT 370

  2. Today in Lecture • Guest Lecturers from OECU: • Katsuhiko Onishi • Toshihiko Hirose • Assignment #2. CCT 370

  3. Assignment #2 Overview • “Visualizing The Virtual And The Real” • Two graded components (35% total): • Field Proposal (10%) – March 17. • Group Presentation (25%) – March 31. CCT 370

  4. Assignment #2 Overview • What is this assignment about? • Comparative analysis of techniques of visualization used in the ‘real’ world versus those used in a ‘virtual’ environment. • Think of yourself as a ‘visual anthropologist’. • Not necessarily interested in ‘gameplay’ elements. CCT 370

  5. Sample Research Themes 1. How does WoW's graphical user interface encourage pre-attentive processing? 2. How do the mapping capabilities of Google Earth compare with the mapping functions available in WoW? Is one more or less panoptic than the other? 3. What techniques of visualization does WoW use in order to make an environment feel 'real'? How successful are these techniques? 4. Does WoW sufficiently encourage cognitive mapping? 5. How does WoW use different lighting and shading techniques in order to highlight important information? CCT 370

  6. Sample Research Themes 6. What techniques of visualization does WoW use in order to decrease player uncertainty? 7. Do different elements of WoW work together to create a 'symphonic effect'? 8. Ware argues that ‘sensory’ representations have several distinct advantages over ‘arbitrary’ representations. What elements of WoW support Ware's view? What elements contradict it? 9. What visual techniques does WoW use in order to differentiate different kinds of information spaces? 10. How does WoW use methods of visualization to direct visual flow and behaviour? CCT 370

  19. Field Proposal • Should contain: • Name of virtual world(s). • Research objective(s). • Research methodology. • Research tools. • Roles and Responsibilities. • Description of group presentation. CCT 370

  20. Group Presentation • Should contain: • Mixed media, focusing on the visual presentation of research. • Will hopefully integrate CSS / HTML learned in labs (but doesn’t have to). • Very wide scope. CCT 370

  21. Suggested Virtual World • World of Warcraft (WoW). • The preferred choice. • Others: • Lord of The Rings Online • Second Life • EverQuest / EverQuest 2 • Eve Online • Ages of Conan • Warhammer Online • Etc. CCT 370

  22. Where to Start with WoW? • Create a trial account. • Download the software. • Check out official website. • Create a character. • Preferred server ‘Earthen Ring’. CCT 370

  23. Some Useful Tools • For taking screenshots and recording live-action: • FRAPS, Guncam, Snapz Pro (Mac). • For editing techniques, examples: • Machinima.com CCT 370

  24. Strategies For Success • How am I going to do well? • Involve the heuristics we’ve discussed in both your research, and in the design of your final presentation. • Be critical. • Be creative. • Track progress if things start to go wrong. • Create a polished final product. CCT 370
