  4. Internships What have we done… • Since 2005 • 3 internships • $12,000 support to date • Offered host paper: Louisville Courier Journal, financial support for internship • Summer 2007 • Launched pilot programs • Omaha World-Herald – Omaha, NE • Daily Press – Newport News, VA

  5. Internships How did it come together… • Determined two host paper pilot • Limited to board member papers for pilot • Selected three partner schools to participate in pilot • West Virginia • Cal Poly • RIT • Host papers recruited and made final selection • ING funds go to host paper

  15. Internships What did we learn… • Begin recruiting earlier – March • Students have higher technical interest and ability • Newspapers will need to invest more to develop leadership skills • Level of work experience can vary radically

  16. Internships Next steps… • Developing broader offering for summer 2008 • Communication details to ING members by end 2007 • Plan to support up to four Host Papers

  32. School of Print Media • One of six schools within RIT's College of Imaging Arts and Sciences • Undergraduate degrees in New Media Publishing and Graphic Media • MS Degree in Print Media • 14 Faculty

  33. Historically, the School of Print Media has played a significant role in the furtherance of technological and educational advances in the area of newspaper research.

  34. What we use to do • Newspaper Operations Management Degree Program • Partnership with Washington Post for employees pursuing Newspaper Operations Management Degree • Newspaper Advisory Board • Paul and Louise Miller Endowed Professorship • Isaiah Thomas Award

  35. Over the past several years the school’s involvement has waned which resulted in reduced student enrollment in SPM’s Newspaper Management program.

  36. What we have continued to do • Offer a concentration in News Media • Paul and Louise Miller Endowed Professorship • Completing agreement with Washington Post • Isaiah Thomas Award

  37. In the past various entities have provided funding to SPM for the purpose of newspaper research. Fortunately for SPM this funding has remained.

New Directions: What we are planning to do • The “Loop” - an intercollegiate multi-media program; collaboration with Rochester’s Democrat and Chronicle • Paul and Louise Miller Endowed Professorship – more newspaper research focus • Isaiah Thomas Award for 2008 • SPM newspaper strategy committee established • Strategic plan developed
