  3. Competition for North America • French , English, Dutch all start colonies in North America • Samuel de Champlain founds Quebec ofr France • New France – French colonies in North America

  4. New France • Founded as a trading empire, the land is enormous but has few inhabitants • Main activity of the colony is the fur trade

  5. English Arrive • First English colony • King James permits investors to start North American colony • 1607 – Colonists found Jamestown – English settlement in Virginia • Many die, but settlement survives

  6. New England • Pilgrims – group persecuted for religion – found Plymouth in 1620 • Puritans – group seeking religious freedom – settle in Massachusetts • Many families in Massachusetts colony, begins growing rapidly

  7. Dutch Settlements • 1609 – Henry Hudson explores waterways for the Dutch • Dutch claim land, found New Netherlands – now Albany and New York City • Dutch focus on fur trade and allow non Dutch settlers into colonies

  8. Caribbean • European nations also settle in the Caribbean • Large cotton and sugar plantations work by African slaves

  9. English vs. Dutch • New Netherlands splits Northern English and Southern English colonies • 1664 – English force surrender of Dutch colonies • 1750, about 1.2 million English settlers have arrived in North America

  10. English vs. French • English settlers pushing west, collide with French possessions • French and Indian War – part of Seven Years’ War • 1763 – France loses to Britain, gives up it’s American colonies

  11. Native Reactions • French and Dutch get along well with Native population • English settlers disagree with natives over land and religion • Hostility breaks out between settlers and natives

  12. Start of the slave trade in N. America • Natives easy prey for European disease • Causes a North American need for workers, Africans brought to North America
