  1. The pronoun EN EN replaces de + noun, and generally refers to things. In English it generally means some, any, of it (them) from there.

  2. Basic Review • Here are examples of DE expressions and items: • du pain • de la glace • des fraises • un taxi • du stade • de la ville

  3. I bought some strawberries. Do you want some? • J’ai acheté des pommes. Tu en veux? • Je viens de la ville. • J’en viens. • I am looking for a taxi. Oh, I found one! • Je cherche un taxi. Oh, j’en ai trouvé un.

  4. EN pronoun • Instead of saying: • La famille achète du pain. • Du pain is replaced by the pronoun EN. Therefore, you would say: • La famille en achète. • You would have “en” because you are replacing some bread with en, which means some. • Elle va acheter deux stylos. • Elle va en acheter deux. • After a number, if a noun is omitted, you must keep the number.

  5. Rule One • The EN precedes the verb -in the present tense -in the past tense Ex. Il mange du raisin rouge. Il en mange. Il a mangé du raisin vert. Il en a mangé.

  6. Rule Two • EN precedes -the infinitive of a futur proche construction Ex. Elle va faire des devoirs. Elle va en faire.

  7. Rule Three • EN -attaches to the end of the verb with a hyphen for a positive command Ex Achète du pain. Achètes-en! Descends vite du train! Descends-envite!

  8. Rule Four • EN -precedes the verb in a negative command Ex. N’achète pas de café. N’en achète pas.
