  1. Women’s Voices, Women’s Lives An Important Woman to Know

  2. Who do you think this is? • Write down some of the clues you see in the photo.

  3. SOJOURNER TRUTH • Ex-slave • Born Isabella Baumfree • Born in 1797 • One of 13 children • First sold at the age of 9. Sold with a herd of sheep for $100. • Escaped from slavery and changed her name in 1843.

  4. Ohio’s Woman’s Rights Convention • Happened in Akron, Ohio in 1851.

  5. At the convention… • Sojourner Truth delivered a moving speech in response to male speakers arguing for men’s superior rights. These men claimed they were better than women because they were smarter and Christ was a man. • Without any practice, Sojourner Truth stood up and spoke. • Speech is on page 743 in the text.

  6. TIME TO READ - Twice • First Time - Take out your textbook and read the speech on page 743. In your notes, jot down lines you like, questions you have, and things that confuse you. • Second Time – Together we’ll read the speech. Listen for the words and how it sounds. As I read visualize this 60 year old woman standing before a convention of men. What do you think she was feeling? Do you have that kind of courage when it really matters?

  7. After reading the speech… • COPY and ANSWER the following questions into the NOTES section (Section 3) of your spiral. They will be checked on Friday.

  8. QUESTIONS – answers must be at least 5 complete sentences long. • 1. What kind of woman can you guess Sojourner Truth was based on what you learned and read today? Back up your answers. • 2. Choose your favorite line from the speech and explain what it means and why you liked it so much. • 3. Describe an experience in your life when you spoke up about an important issue. If you haven’t ever, what are you waiting for?
