  2. Bellwork: Read the quote below.Do you agree/disagree with the following quote by Marva Collins or Marian Wright Edelman? Explain why or why not. “Success doesn’t come to you... you go to it." ~ Marva Collins, African AmericanEducator

  3. Reflection: Write your own quote about the importance of education that you will utilize throughout the school year that aligns with JHS theme.

Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom. ~George Washington Carver • Education gives knowledge • What are the direct effects of being educated? • What are the direct effects of being uneducated? • Education leads to career progression • Ask the students to define expert or expertise. What does it mean to be an expert? • How does one become and expert? • Teachers, relate being an expert to your profession. • Education builds character • Ask the students to define the words cultivate or civilize. • How does a person “learn from experience”? • Is it fair to say that education cultivates us into mature individuals?

  6. Reflection: Write a narrative addressing what education has done in your life in regards to knowledge gain, planning your futures and/or your character development .

Complete an essay that covers the following topics: • Compare and Contrast your classroom experience to that in the attached pictures. • Based on what you see in the pictures, how would you describe the student’s determination to become educated? • How do you feel about your opportunity to receive quality education?

  10. Reflection: Review the quote from B.B. King. Use the quote to expound on the importance and value of education? Complete an exit slip for your teacher with your response.

  11. August 21, 20144th period Objective: Students will review the components used to set an effective goal and complete a SMART Goals worksheet outlining their career and intermediate goal along with an action plan.

  12. Bell Work:List 5-7 goals that you would like to reach over a period of time. Be specific on your goals, ex. To find a job vs. To become a pharmaceutical engineer and work to develop drugs to treat Alzheimer’s disease.

SMART Goal Setting Following are components of an effective goal – one that describes performance standards that will “tell us what good behavior looks like.” The SMART acronym can help us remember these components. Specific: The goal should identify a specific action or event that will take place. Measurable: The goal and its benefits should be quantifiable. Achievable: The goal should be attainable given available resources. Realistic: The goal should require you to stretch some, but allow the likelihood of success. Timely: The goal should state the time period in which it will be accomplished

  16. Bell work: Read the following quote and describe in 3-5 sentences what this quote means to you. “The true test of a man’s character is what he does when no one is watching.” - John Wooden Allow students to share their responses.

  17. After the students have shared their definition, provide the following dictionary.com definition of honesty: 1. the quality or fact of being honest; uprightness and fairness. 2. truthfulness, sincerity, or frankness. 3. freedom from deceit or fraud.

  18. Class work: Show the following video clip the Pass It On “Honesty” commercial.  This commercial was created to promote honesty. It shows a teen who makes an extra effort to return a woman’s purse after she left it at a bus stop. http://www.values.com/inspirational-stories-tv-spots/112-Purse

  19. Discuss the commercial with your class.You may want to ask them if they had ever been in a similar situation. Be sure to address the following questions: • Has anyone ever returned something of yours that you thought was lost or stolen forever? How did you feel? Have you returned something to someone else? How did that person feel? How did it make you feel knowing that you did the right thing? • How are the quote and the commercial related? • In your own words, describe the word “honesty”. • What are some reasons that a person may choose to not be honest? • Why is being honest important? • Who does a lack of honesty affect?

You only lie when you're afraid. ~John Gotti”Stop 2. Allow the students to briefly give their thoughts on the two quotes. 3. On a scale of 1 – 5, rate your current honesty level. In at least 5 sentences, talk about what you have learned about honesty and how it relates to yourself, your life, and the lives of those around you.

  22. Bell work: In your own words, define the word “trustworthy”. How do honesty and trustworthiness go together?

  23. Allow students to share their responses. After the students have shared their definition, provide the following dictionary.com definition of trustworthy: • deserving of trust or confidence; dependable; • reliable

  24. Class work: 1. Show the following video clip the “Job Is Yours”.  An employee is asked to do something that he is uncomfortable with by his boss. This clip shares the outcome of the employee’s decision. http://www.wingclips.com/movie-clips/courageous/job-is-yours

  25. Have the students answer and discuss the video clip: • Summarize the video. What was the situation? • Why did Javier refuse the boss’s request? What do you think he meant by mentioning his family and his God? • What did Javier think was going to happen when he refused the boss’s proposition? • What actually happened? • How many people before Javier failed to do the right thing? Are you surprised? Why or why not? • Describe a time that you chose to be honest and it worked out for the best.

  26. Reflection: 1. Share the following quote: Honesty is the best policy. – Benjamin Franklin 2. Reflect on the quote. Write 3-5 sentences addressing in response to the following question: Even though it may not always be easy to be honest, why is it considered the “best policy”?

  27. August 21, 20147thperiod Objective: Students will be able to recognize situations in real-life where their honesty could be tested and how these decisions affect others.

Bell work: Have students answer the following questions: • What would you do if someone stole your grandmother’s purse while she was grocery shopping? • How would you feel if your mom was fired from her job because her cash register came up short? • What would you do if you let your sister borrow your new cellphone and someone stole it from her?

  29. Allow students to share their responses. After the students have shared their responses, ask them the following questions: • If they would feel as strongly if it were a stranger who had gotten their purse or cellphone stolen? Why or why not? • Point out to the students that every person is someone’s daughter, son, brother, sister, mom, dad, or grandparent. If we would not want those things to happen to our loved ones, why would we want to do the same thing to someone else?

  30. Class work: (2 video clips – WWYD) • Show the first video clip from the television show “What Would You Do?”  This first video clip shows how customers react when an employee takes advantage of a blind person paying a bill. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKK3bWINgRM • 2. Have the students answer and discuss the video clip: • What do you think of the employee’s character? • What would you have done if you were another customer in the bakery?

Show the second video clip from the television show “What Would You Do?”.  This second video clip shows how different customers react when they are given too much change. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WD1mCal-Ajo(approx. 6 minutes) • 4. Have the students answer and discuss the video clip: • What could happen to that employee if the customer had not returned the money? • What would you have done if you were the customer that received too much change?

  32. Reflection: 1. Write 3-5 sentences in response to the following question: When faced with the decision of being honest and/or doing the right thing, how could asking yourself the question “what if this were my mom, grandma, sister, or brother?” help you make a better decision?
