STARTALK • STARTALK increases the number of Americans learning, speaking, and teaching critical need foreign languages by offering K – 12 students and teachers creative and engaging summer experiences • Exemplifies best practices in language education & teacher development • 150 K-16 programs in Arabic, Chinese, Dari, Hindi, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu in 2011 • The University of Florida and the University of South Florida hosted STARTALK summer workshops in 2011 • National Foreign Language Center, Univ of MD, is the lead for STARTALK • Programs for next summer will be announced in early 2012 • Multimedia catalog of free training materials on the website • Downloadable curriculum development guides http://startalk.umd.edu/ http://www.nflc.org/sites/default/files/publications/the_teachers_we_need.pdf

Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center • The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC) is regarded as one of the finest schools for foreign language instruction in the nation. The majority of DLIFLC products are publicly available through its website • Among these publicly available products are: • Headstart Language Instruction • Cultural Orientations, which offer an engaging introductions to various cultural groups • An Accent Library with audio samples illustrating regional speech variations in a given language • Narrated Folktales and Legends, rich and fascinating bilingual social lessons • Over 2,000 online language lessons with audio and scripts are available in 24 languages via GLOSS http://www.dliflc.edu/products.html

5. National Security Language Initiative for Youth • State Dept NSLI-Y provides full, merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students to learn less commonly taught languages in summer and academic-year overseas immersion programs • Eligibility Requirements: • U.S. citizen • 15 - 18 years of age • Enrolled in high school at the time of application • GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale • In 2012 and 2013, the NSLI-Y program will offer short-term (6-8 week) summer and long-term (8-11 month) academic year programs in the following languages: Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Russian, Hindi, Persian, and Turkish • Applications for 2012-13 programs are due November 3, 2011 http://www.nsliforyouth.org/

The Language Flagship • Defense Department National Security Education Program • The Language Flagship is a partnership among government, education and business supplying educational opportunities from kindergarten through graduate school • Flagship languages include Arabic, Chinese, Hindi and Urdu, Korean, Persian, Russian, and African languages • There are currently: • 22 Centers and Programs • 8 Overseas Programs • 3 K–12 Programs http://www.thelanguageflagship.org/

7. NSEP Boren Scholarships and Fellowships • Provide funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to add an international and language component to their education • Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world critical to U.S. interests. Application deadline for 2012-13 program is February 9, 2012 • Boren Fellowships provide up to $30,000 to U.S. graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate education through specialization in area study, language study, or increased language proficiency. Application deadline for 2012-13 is January 31, 2012 • Boren supports study and research in prominent areas of the world including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are not included in this program • Level 3 and 4 ILR proficiency is a common goal http://www.borenawards.org/

8. NSEP English for Heritage Speakers Scholarship • English for Heritage Language Speakers (EHLS) program is an intensive professional development program for adults who have high levels of proficiency in their native or heritage language • For 2012, the program is recruiting native speakers of Arabic, Dari, Hausa, Hindi, Igbo, Mandarin Chinese, Pashto, Persian Farsi, Punjabi, Somali, Swahili, and Urdu • Each EHLS scholarship recipient must seek employment in the Department of Defense, the Intelligence Community, the Department of State, or the Department of Homeland Security. NSEP does not guarantee employment, but it does provide several types of assistance to EHLS participants as they carry out their job searches http://www.cal.org/ehls/

9. Centers of Academic Excellence • DIA CAE Program Office performs oversight for ten designated universities. DIA provides competitive grants ($250K-$750K) to academic institutions to promote the alignment of curricula in international relations, foreign language, and cultural immersion • The goals of the CAE Program are: • to develop long-term academic partnerships • to support those educational institutions in meeting specific Intelligence Community (IC) needs • to ensure that the IC has a diverse, highly-qualified, and motivated applicant pool for its mission-critical occupations • Two universities in Florida have received CAE grants: • Florida International University • Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University http://www.dni.gov/cae/index.htm
