  1. SCSU Faculty Development Workshop:What Learning Management Systems Can Do for Your Students (& You): An Interactive Case Study24 September 2008Kristine Anthisanthisk1@southernct.edu

  2. Learning Management Systems? • What are they? • Learning Management Systems (LMSs) are websites created by textbook publishers to correspond to the books they publish. • What can they do? • After registering, students can • complete assignments that are website-graded • read the e-text in .pdf format • LMSs are more than online quizzes (e.g., Instructors can limit the # of attempts, impose time limits, specify deadlines, etc.) • Assignments can be saved in the course account for the instructor to access at his or her convenience.

  3. Why LMSs? • LMSs have the potential to: • Assess student learning • Enhance brick and mortar classroom teaching • Quite possibly improve student learning • e.g., provide immediate out-of-class consequences for not reading, reduce procrastination, improve test-taking skills

  4. Goals for Today’s Workshop • Participants will learn to: • take a LMS assignment as a Student • create an LMS assignment as an Instructor

  5. LMS Options • Which systems are available? • They include Cengage’s CengageNow, Pearson’s eLearning & Assessment Solutions (e.g., MyCompLab.com, MyMathLab.com, MyDevelopmentLab.com, etc.), and McGrawHill’s Aris. • CengageNow = the one with which I have experience. • After considering the LMSs available a few years ago, I chose CengageNow because at that time, it was the only LMS that had ‘pre-test, ISP, post-test’ capability.

  6. CengageNow as a Student

  7. Access Codes? Course Keys? • Access Codes = with CengageNow textbooks • Sample Access Codes available today PPHJPFMP3MLCCG PP8LRXWP3J6BRB PPMJ76GP3HCSJT PPS1NTTP3XN51H PP8QCK3P3292L2 PPH6F1KP3KVM3F PP92DB1P3JND7Q PP8VXC1P3WWQQX PPN8FDWP3427V7 PPJRN51P34T594 • Course Key =Number generated by CengageNow • When & How?
