LACCEI – Latin American and Caribbean Consortium of Engineering Institutions • 12 universities founded LACCEI is 2003 • Universities that want to collaborate with LAC region • 160+ universities from the Americas and Europe are part of the consortium in 2013 • Since 2005, part of the OAS Engineering for the Americas and the Ministerial Action Plans, and currently participating in Working Group 2: Human resources training & education • Host annually the OAS Engineering for the Americas Encuentro • Annually present progress on the OAS EftA – LACCEI initiatives

OAS EftA – LACCEI Advancing Engineering Program Accreditation • Ongoing since 2006 • Par Amigos initiative • Identifying experts in engineering program accreditation • Developed and gave workshops (English and Spanish) to train universities seeking accreditation for the 1st time • 2nd Forum of Accrediting Agencies of the Americas • To bring together accrediting agencies in the Americas to discuss challenges and move towards mutual recognition, and more signatories of the ALAI Accord and the Washington Accord • Next steps: • Accreditation workshops in Guatemala and Ecuador • 3rd Accrediting Agency Forum in 2014 in Ecuador

OAS EftA-LACCEI Women in STEM initiative(STEM = Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) 2010 OAS proclaimed the Year of The Inter-American Women Evaluate successes and challenges in the defense of women’s human rights and gender . equity and equality, and create awareness regarding gender issues. 2009 UN Study: 46% of STEM researchers in LAC are female, and Argentina, Cuba, Brazil, Paraguay and Venezuela have achieved gender parity Source: Women and Girls in Science and Technology: increasing opportunities in Education, Research and Employment, E M. OAS EftA – LACCEI Engineering Education for Disaster Recovery Initiative • Requested: • Redesign of curriculum, labs, degrees to support the rebuilding of Haiti and disaster recovery, find professors to teach STEM courses • Earthquake Engineering – University of Buffalo • Access and support for software on Cloud • Research collaborations in area of disaster prevention and recovery. • Progress: • Found travel grants to develop the three Deans • Found collaborators African Ministers Forum - Dec 9-11 MOOCs MOOLs Credits, Double Degrees Hamadou Saliah-Hassane PhD Université d´Quebec, CA Yacob Astatke, PhD Morgan State U., US Tarek Chehidi, PhD African Development Bank

International Certifications – exploring use of MOOCs, MOOLs, SPOCs, Clouds, & Collaboration Communities • IGIP International Engineering Pedagogist • Updating curriculum content, methodologies and technology to offer in the Americas • IGLU University Management and Leadership • IGLU Institute has approached LACCEI to develop a specialization for academic Engineering leaders. • Collaboration Community • > 10,000 in the database, designing specialized search engine for searching for academic or research collaborators

Recommendations • Invest in the Plan of Action of Panama, especially with seed funds for the initiatives and for follow-up of Engineering for the Americas (EftA) projects • Encourage the national and regional engineering program accreditation agencies to sign ALAI and Washington accords for hemispheric and global mutual recognition. • Support initiative led by the Deans of Haiti to establish engineering programs that support disaster recovery • Fund fellowships (such as the U.S. Jeffersonian and AAAS Fellowships) and Centers to provide expertise and support to the Ministers Vision 2025 and to the Engineering for the Americas initiatives
