  2. Background: • Born on October 24, 1788 and died April 30, 1879 . • Born in Newport, New Hampshire in a stable family. • She was educated by her mother and brother, Horatio.

  3. Marriage: • Hale was working as a school teacher and soon met David Hale (married in 1813). • They had five children together: David (1815), Horatio (1817), Frances (1819), Sarah (1820), and William (1822). • Her husband died in 1822; after his death, Hale wore black for the rest of her life.

  4. Career: • After her husband’s death, she collected her poems and published The Genius of Oblivionin 1823. • When she published the novel, Northwood, a Tale of New England in 1827, that brought her to Boston for a new publication (American Ladies’ Magazine), which she accepted in 1828. • As an editor, she mainly wrote about literary criticism, sketches of American life, essays, and poetry in the magazine. • She promoted education for women and opportunities for women to teach. • In 1830, she published Poems for Our Children which contained her most famous poem, “Mary Had a Little Lamb”.
