  2. Who is Daniel Hale Williams? • He is known as the 1st physician to successfully perform heart surgery.

  3. His Childhood • 5th of 7 children born to Daniel Williams, Jr. & Sarah Price Williams • After his father’s death in May 1867, his family separated.

  4. EDUCATION • He graduated from Janesville Classical Academy in 1878. • He graduated from Chicago Medical College in 1883 with his doctoral degree.

  5. His Career • Worked at South Side Dispensary • Voluntarily treated children at Protestant Orphan Asylum.

  6. Career continued….. • (1894-1898) Worked as surgeon-in-chief at Freedman’s Hospital in Washington, D.C. • (1912-1926) Worked as attending staff surgeon at St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago

  7. His Major Accomplishments • In 1889, he was the 1st African American to be appointed to the State Board of Health. • He established Provident Hospital on May 4, 1891. • Provident Hospital is known as the first interracial hospital.

  8. Major Accomplishments continued….. • In July 1893 at Provident Hospital, he conducted open heart surgery on James Cornish. • James Cornish recovered successfully.

  9. His Death • He died on Tuesday, August 4, 1931 in Idlewild, Michigan.

  10. Honors • Dr. Williams has received many honors for his career successes. • A plague is located at Provident Hospital for his service. • There are 2 schools named for him in New York City and 1 school in Chicago.
