WWII Unit Outline • European Theater of Combat • The Holocaust • Pacific Theater of Combat
Expansion & Appeasement Benjamin Rall
Nazi Expansion • Lebensraum • Literally translates to “living space” • Idea that countries need a certain amount of land to survive • One slight problem for Hitler… • Germany did not have the land Hitler wanted
Hitler’s Goals • 3 Main areas of land he wanted: • Rhineland • Austria • Sudetenland (located in Czechoslovakia) • Why would Hitler want this land? • Unite German people • More resources
Rhineland • Treaty of Versailles did not allow the region to be militarized • France had occupied it during the 1920s • Left 1930 • Hitler decided to remilitarize the region 1936 • What did Great Britain & France do in response?
Appeasement What is it?
Austria • Hitler wanted to annex Austria • Called the anschluss • Hitler pressured Austria to hold a referendum to decide whether or not they would join Germany • Based on what you know about the Nazis, do you think this was a fair election? • Britain, France, USA did not strongly condemn this
Sudetenland • Hitler wanted this portion of Czechoslovakia • Region primarily populated by Germans • Hitler demanded that Germany gain this territory or they would go to war • Also promised this was the last piece of land he wanted • Great Britain & France were allies with Czechoslovakia & wanted to support them, but also wanted to avoid war Group Activity: Imagine you are British and French leaders. How would you respond to Hitler’s demands?
What Actually Happened • Munich Conference (1938) • Britain and France desperately wanted to avoid war • Agreement made between Britain, France, & Germany giving Hitler the land he wanted • British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlin had some quotes that aged really well: • He called Hitler “a good man” • Believed that there will be “peace for our time” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQ95ffnU4Sw
Alliances • Anti-Comintern Pact (1936) • Signed by Germany, Italy, Japan, and others • Anti-Communist alliance • Later solidified with the Tripartite Pact (1940) to formally signify the Axis Powers • Pact of Steel (1939) • Further alliance between Germany and Italy
Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact • What was one problem Germany faced during WWI? • Two-front war • How to fix this? • Create an alliance with the Soviets • Pact stated that neither country would attack the other • Hitler totally followed this… right? • HITLER IS NOW FREE TO GO TO WAR
To wrap things up • The Great Dictator (1940) • Satirical comedy by Charlie Chaplin mocking Hitler • Speech: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibVpDhW6kDQ (watch the first 3:30)
