The harmful effects of living a sedentary lifestyle are so hazardous to our health that many medical professionals believe sitting disease could be the next epidemic. It may sound harmless enough, but sitting disease is responsible for ailments in people of all ages, including headaches, cancer, heart disease, kidney disease and diabetes.


Numerous studies have found that when our body is still for a prolonged time, the enzymes responsible for metabolism “go to sleep”. Metabolism is what activates regeneration and growth in our cells, which keeps our body functioning at its best. By sitting still for long periods of time day after day, we are permanently damaging our cells and setting ourselves up to get sick.


The good news is that you don’t need to find the fountain of youth to prevent the damaging effects of sitting disease. Experts agree that you can significantly improve your metabolism and spur cell growth just by making an effort to move a little all through the day. The goal is to keep those enzymes awake through lifestyle activity, and you don’t need a sixty-minute power session to do it. Here are some simple tips to keep moving throughout the day.


Move Conveniences Farther Away - While it is handy to have the phone, remote control and trash can right by your favorite television chair, by simply moving them across the room you are setting yourself up to win.

  • Turn off the TV – a television screen can be the equivalent of a ball and chain, forcing you to stay in one place for entertainment. Consider turning on some music instead. Music allows you to move freely rather than be tied to watching a screen. You may even find you and your wide awake metabolism tapping your toes and bouncing a bit to the beat!
  • Use your Countertop as a Table – We have become accustomed to sitting for so many activities, including eating, reading and writing letters. All these things can just as easily be accomplished standing up, however, and the countertop is an excellent workspace. It provides a solid base to keep you balanced and safe as well as plenty of surface space to accommodate your activity of choice.
  • Tidy Up – as you become more active throughout the house, it will be important to keep clutter at bay to avoid inadvertent accidents. Luckily, this is just another opportunity for you to move around!
