  1. Neuter Nouns With Brittany Kach, Julia Angotti, And the Mane 6!

  2. What WE will Learn • What neuter nouns are • Case endings for neuter nouns • Comparison to feminine and masculine nouns • How to distinguish neuter nouns in a sentence • A few FUN exercises!!!

  3. What neuter nouns are • Second declension • Stem is –um • Mostly same endings as masculine but not all

  4. Case endings • Let’s use the word malum as an example.

  5. Compare + contrast • Neuter nominative plural and accusative plural has the same ending as feminine nominative singular. • Neuter and masculine nouns have mostly the same endings except for nominative singular and plural. • Neuter nominative singular has the same ending as accusative singular.

  6. Distinguishing neuter nouns • Neuter nouns in nominative singular can be mistaken for being accusative. • Neuter nouns in nominative plural or accusative plural can be mistaken for being feminine. • You can tell the difference by the order of the words in the sentence (even though word order doesn’t usually matter in Latin, sentence structure usually goes subject-object-verb). • If you don’t know whether the subject is neuter or feminine and thus do not know if it is singular or plural, you can look at the verb ending to tell what number it is.

  7. Distinguishing neuter nouns • Here are some exercises to help figure out what case neuter nouns are in and distinguish them from feminine: • Malumabarborocecidit. • The apple fell from the tree. • “Malum” is neuter nominative. • Romani bellum pugnabant. • The Romans were fighting a war. • “Bellum” is neuter accusative. • Verbadeorumnautasducebunt. • The words of the gods will save the sailors. • “Verba” is neuter nominative.

  8. List of neuter vocab • Malum • Oppidum • Consilium • Frumentum • Praemium • Signum • Auxilium • Bellum • Officium • Otium • Atrium • Templum • Studium • Verbum • Periculum
