  7. Quick tip • A noun always follows the words a, an, or the. • However, a noun does not have to follow “a,” “an,” or “the.” A noun can easily appear without any of those words before it. • Also, the noun does not have to be the first word after “a,” “an,” or “the.” Other words may be between “a,” “an,” or “the” and the noun.

  8. Examples • Theturtle is on thesidewalk. • An elephant ate the peanut. • Cake is delicious. • My grandfather is a great person. • The new park was built in California.

  9. Another tip • In a sentence, a noun can answer our questions, “who?” or, “what?” • Examples: • My sister gave her friend a card. • The sprinter ran fast. • “fast” doesn’t answer either of our questions, so it isn’t a noun.

  10. Let’s practice – With a Partner • Identify the nouns in the following sentences. • While watching the news, Stacey heard the weatherman say to pack an umbrella. • Katie moved to California with her family. • The lightning from the storm scared my dog. • My mom went on a walk around the neighborhood.

  11. More practice – On Your Own! • Dad had to run an errand to the hardware store. • Lindsey lit a match so she could start the fire. • The library received a huge shipment of new books. • Dad missed hitting the other car by an inch. • The governor pardoned the inmate.
