  1. World population growth Sergey M. Zverev This speech was presented by author at the Moscow Toastmasters’ club meeting on February, 4 1999. PRESS ANY KEY TO GO ON ...

  2. Introduction • Now that the world community grows tremendously, on the turn of the third millenium, I want to touch upon the problem, which may become a reason for historic changes in the mankind • The world is getting overpopulated. If the current trend in the growth of world population persisted, the number of people on Earth would become infinite, or endless, very soon.

  3. Statistics shows... • If we consider statistics on the global population of the recent thousand years, it shows some surprising and frightening tendencies, in the growth of population.

  4. First graph • On the first graph, we can see the amount of the world inhabitants, growing from year to year, since the year 0, or Christ's birth.

  5. The first thing that comes to mind after a short look at the graph is that there is a certain law (rule), under which the population increases. The second assertion is that the graph shows a hyperbolic dependence of the number of people N on the year t. • Let's review the second graph, which shows the value of one divided by N as a function of the year t.

  6. Second graph • Now it is obvious that the 1 over N is a linear function of t, with a very good precision. • The simple analysis of this graph results in the assertion that there is a positive natural number t, in which the value of 1 over N, reaches zero, or, similarly, the value of N, (or the population rate), becomes infinite.

  7. Lyrical digression... • Now allow me to make a lyrical digression. • Mathematics is a very important field of knowledge. It carries the means for analyzing life. And almost in every business in life, is mathematics used. It enables people to use their previous experience in the following activities. It gives the means to make a valuable prediction, or forecast, of the events in our life. But not this time. In this case, mere analytical approach brings wrong results. Of course that is obvious commonplace observation that the number of Earth inhabitants will never exceed certain limit. It will never be endless. But these observations give a ground for a serious concern...

  8. So, what’s the matter ? • The matter is that the global population trend is going to change in the closest future. The law, which almost perfectly fitted the growth of the amount of people for hundreds of years, will alter. And there must be a strong explanation for that. Why will it all change? • In my opinion, that there must happen something, (and to tell you more, something disastrous), and we must be aware of that. These causes might be human-related processes, such as pollution of the environment, plagues or diseases, wars, and so on; or outer forces, such as meteorite falls, star wars and all the thing that our imagination may invent.

  9. Be aware ! • Finally, I would like to repeat that there is a problem, an unsolved one, which may lead to the terrible consequences. Having this problem in mind, we people, have to first, seek the ways to solve it, and second, do our best to postpone the moment of apocalypse, reduce the harm which people make to our planet, the Earth.
