  1. starter activity Your teacher will give your table a set of key words relating to Dover Castle. Spread them out on your table, face down. Take it in turns to to describe the words without actually saying the word on the card. If you can’t define the word, put it back on the table. The team which first identifies all or the most words will win.

  2. How has Dover changed over time?  Aims To review key words connected with Dover Castle’s history To understand how the site has changed over time

  3.  Your task Watch a clip from a recent episode from Doctor Who. How might it help with our understanding of Dover’s Secret Wartime tunnels?

  4.  Your task • You are Time Lords (or Time Ladies!) going back in time to one of the following periods of Dover’s history: • Roman period • Middle Ages • Tudor period • Napoleonic Era • World War Two • Cold War Era • In a two minute scene you must describe what the site was like and the enemies facing Dover at the time before you jump back into your Tardis to the next era.

  5. Extension tasks • Produce a thirty second trailer for your episode of Doctor Who – you could even film it! • Explore some of the weblinks on Dover on the Studyhistory website. Start to bookmark your own favourites and collect a folder of images you could use to illustrate written work.

  6.  Homework • Your teacher will give you a timeline template. Use the template to record as many key events from Dover’s history as you can. Make sure your work is neat and you record as much detail as you can. You could use colour-coding to represent the different phases in the sites history. This will be an important document in helping you write your controlled assessment.

  7.  Plenary • Define 5 words that your teacher calls out • Describe 2 key features of the site during these periods: • Roman • Medieval • Tudor • Napoleonic • Second World War • Cold War • When do you think Dover was most under threat?
