    4. History Standard Students use materials drawn from the diversity of human experience to analyze and interpret significant events, patterns, and themes in this history of Ohio, the United States and the world.

    5. History Activities Have the children make a timeline of a year and put holidays in it. Have the children make a calendar labeled with all U.S. Holidays. Have the children illustrate it. Have the children interview their grandparents or an older adult on how they celebrated a certain holiday Read a St. Patricks day book and have the children write about what they liked best.

    8. People in Societies Activities Have the children make a book on how holiday sayings are said in different languages. Read a Christmas book and a Hanukkah book and discuss their similarities and differences. Have the children make Valentines Day cards to share with each of their classmates. Have the children wear green for St. Patricks Day and discuss customs. Have the students create a collage of Christmas having examples, or symbols showing how it is celebrated.

    11. Geography Activities 1. Have students draw a map of their school and design a route for them to follow in order to sing Christmas/Hanukah/Kwanzaa carols to other classrooms. 2. Take students on a field trip to a corn maze. Discuss the similarities of navigating through a maze and navigating through the streets in their community. 3. Print a copy of a map of the United States. Use map quest as a tool to locate 10 holiday cities on the map.     12. Geography Activities Contd 4. Students will each be assigned a different holiday celebrated around the world. Students will research their holiday and present the information to the class. Ex: make a poster or write a paper 5. Give students a map of the world. Ask them to identify where some of the major holidays that are celebrated in the United States originated. Write the name of the holiday on the map where the holiday was originated. Ex. St. Patricks Day would be written on Ireland.

    14. Economics Standard Students use economics reasoning skills and knowledge of major economic concepts, issues and systems in order to make informed choices as producers, consumers, savers, investors, workers and citizens in an interdependent world.

    15. Economics Activities Have students design a postal stamp for Christmas. Students will host a bake sale with a variety of green foods and traditional Irish recipes. The money made in the bake sale will be donated to the school. Students will distribute flags to people in the community for Veterans Day. Read If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Joffee Numeroff to the class. Discuss wants and needs for goods and services. As a class, write a story about unlimited wants for goods and services (this means the list never ends) with a Halloween theme. 5. Read aloud to students about ujamaa and how it relates to Kwanzaa. At the end of the lesson, students should be able to tell you what ujamaa means (cooperative economics).

    18. Government Activities 1. Have the students learn and discuss the different Christmas customs for different countries. Then have them do a compare and contrast chart comparing the other countries customs to the United States customs. 2. Students will learn the symbols associated with the different holidays. Then they will make their own symbol and share with the class what it means and what holiday it would represent. 3. Have the students choose a holiday they like, then have them learn some of the laws/traditions dealing with that holiday. Then have the students make their own list of laws/traditions they would have if they were in charge.

    19. Government Activities Contd 4. The students will discuss voting and what it means. Then the students will make a ballot and vote for their favorite holiday. They will then make a chart with the voting results. 5. The students will plan a holiday party to have in their classroom. They will make a list of rules that must be followed during the party and the consequences if the rules are broken. They will then display them on a poster to have during their party.

    21. Citizenship Rights and Responsibilities Standard Student use knowledge of the rights and responsibilities of citizenship in order to examine and evaluate civic ideals and to participate in community life and the American democratic system.

    22. Citizenship Rights and Responsibilities Activities 1. The students will make posters on safety precautions to use during Halloween time. They will then display them in the school hallways. 2. Have the students discuss different items they have and use in their homes during different holidays. Then have each student put together a poster of the items they use/have for the holidays they celebrate. Make sure the students have respect for others items and ideas. 3. The students will learn what happens during a Kwanzaa celebration such as foods, decorations traditions etc. The students will then plan their own Kwanzaa celebration designing posters making a food list and decorations.

The students will then discuss the history and customs of St Patricks Day. 5. The students will be read the book The Story of Thanksgiving by Nancy J Skarmeas. The students will then discuss the difference between the way the pilgrims celebrated Thanksgiving, and the ways they celebrate Thanksgiving at home.

    25. Social Studies Skills and Methods Standard Students collect, organize, evaluate and synthesize information from multiple sources to draw logical conclusions. Students communicate this information using appropriate social students terminology in oral, written or multimedia form and apply what they have learned to societal issues in simulated or real-world settings.

    26. Social Studies Skills and Methods Activities Students will read several stories about holidays and will distinguish the difference between fact and fiction. Students will be given a holiday to research. Students must find information on the holiday and site the source. Have cards with holiday sequences on them (one for each holiday). Students must look at the cards and predict what will happen next by sequencing the cards by the order in which the holiday happens.

    27. Social Studies Skills and Methods Activities Contd Students will write about their favorite holiday and then communicate their ideas and thoughts to the class. Students will discuss in a small group why they feel it is important to understand the different types of holidays that people celebrate. Then students will share information with the class orally.
