  4. 1777-1778 The Winter at Valley Forge Dec. 1777 – Washington’s army consisted of around 12,000 men Valley Forge is located about 20 miles North of Philadelphia It was a horrible winter, lack of food and clothing and extreme weather No battle ever took place here the only enemy was the cold and hunger

  5. 1777-1778 • To this day Valley Forge is remembered for suffering and courage • During the terrible winter about 2,000 men died of starvation and disease • Marquis de Lafayette & Baron von Steuben spent the time drilling and training the men – making them become better soldiers • As the Continentals spent a horrible winter at Valley Forge the British spent a pleasant winter in Philadelphia in peoples homes, taverns, and theatres

  6. 1777-1778 Help From France • In 1778 France officially signed a treaty with the Continental Congress that gave the Americans French support,soldiers, supplies, and ships • Benjamin Franklin a skilled and experienced diplomat – negotiator between countries – convinced King Louis XVI of France to help • The key support would come from the French navy
