  1. Managing Multiple Bar Codeson End User Packaging Chuck Biss – GS1 Global Office

  2. Managing Multiple Bar Codes • The “three hats” that I wear… • GS1 Healthcare • Global AIDC Subject Matter Expert… …as (AIDC) Automatic Identification and Data Capture technology applies to Healthcare • GS1 BarCodes and Identifications • Global AIDC Subject Matter Expert… …as it applies to Symbologies, Scanning, Printing, Quality, Standardization • AIDC Technical Committee Member / representative -AIM TSC, GS1 BCID TG, SC31 WG1 / WG3, etc. • ISO / IEC JTC1 • Chairman ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 31… the subcommittee on all AIDC • All Work Groups

  3. Multiple Bar Code Symbol Landscape and Challenge Managing Multiple Bar Codes

  4. Managing Multiple Bar Codes • NOT the challenge…

  5. Managing Multiple Bar Codes • Our challenge…

  6. Managing Multiple Bar Codes • Our challenge… • Need for more data on an item / package… • More data needed in the GS1 AIDC data carrier(s)… • Various levels of legacy systems / capabilities • Multiple bar codes are already being seen on a single item / package NOW…

  7. Managing Multiple Bar Codes • Our challenge… • …to ensure bar code technology remains user and machine friendly…

  8. Managing Multiple Bar Codes How do I know which one I should focus on? Which do I scan to get the information I need?? • Our challenge… • What if I scan the wrong one?

  9. Managing Multiple Bar Codes • Our challenge… • Industry, consumers & machines being confronted with multiple symbols to choose from on a single item… • …and potentially divergent data approaches.

  10. Managing Multiple Bar Codes Our challenge… FMCG / Retail Healthcare POTENTIAL: Multiple Diverse Solutions GOAL: One Solution For All Internal ID Mobile COM

  11. Managing Multiple Bar Codes • Our basic process, following GSMP… • Gather the needs / business requirements from all user sectors affected (FMCG, Healthcare, internal, and mobile com applications...) • Map the data solutions to the needs / requirements AND our existing standards • Determine what are we missing & what do we have • Consider the appropriate data carrier(s) keeping in mind the operational needs (printing, scanning, etc.) and data solutions (needed capacity, etc.) • Identify the potential solutions that support all sectors (FMCG, Healthcare, internal, and mobile com applications...) • Standardize the solutions then update the General Specifications

  12. Managing Multiple Bar Codes • Our main objectives… • Support all of our members’ business requirement with as few data elements as possible in the bar codes (data carriers) • Enable our membership to have that data in as few bar codes (data carriers) as possible • Make it obvious to consumers, end users, caregivers, etc. which one is THEIR bar code, IF multiple symbols are necessary • Make it obvious to the scanning / imaging machines which bar code is the bar code for application at hand

  13. Managing Multiple Bar Codes • Our guiding principles… • GS1 GSMP, our Carrier Strategy PDD (Project Description Documents) and our Work Group CTA (Call to Action) • Wherever possible… one bar code - NOT two • We are looking for… • …the possible best solution… • …as simple as possible… • …global… • …compatible with current legacy (where possible)

  14. Managing Multiple Bar Codes • We are not starting “from scratch”…

  15. CTA (Call to Action) and the Work Group – Issued 20 May Managing Multiple Bar Codes

  16. Managing Multiple Bar Codes • Objective/Scope of the Work Group • Formed to assess the impact of the move toward multiple bar codes on one end-user package to make it easy for humans and machines to use bar code technology in supply chain and mobile commerce applications. • Some examples of the problems that could occur are: • a consumer mobile scanning a code designed for back-end processing • a POS scanner reading a code designed for consumer mobile scanning • hospital users unsure which code to read due to multiple bar codes fulfilling • regional requirements

  17. Managing Multiple Bar Codes • Objective/Scope of the Work Group • The main objectives will be: • To identify potential solutions to support FMCG, Healthcare, internal, and mobile commerce applications and then standardize those solutions • To support all business requirements with as few data elements as possible in the bar codes (data carriers) so our membership will be able to use as few data elements as possible • To support all business requirements using as few bar codes (data carriers) as possible so our membership in order to get that data into as few data carriers as possible • To make it obvious to consumers, end users, caregivers, etc. which bar code on the package is THEIR bar code • To make it obvious to machines which bar code is their bar code of interest

  18. Managing Multiple Bar Codes • Objective/Scope of the Work Group • The output focus is twofold • A standard on which data carrier to use (when and how) looking for the best solution at the global level, independent of current legacy • A standard solution to avoid dual or triple carriers on a package (wherever possible one bar code symbol and not two or more) • Specific deliverables will be GS1 General Specification application standards covering: • Types of GS1 data carriers (bar codes) that should be read (mobile phones, POS scanner, portable scanning data terminals , etc.) • What data is encoded in the bar codes • How information is retrieved based on attributes encoded • Specifications for placement on products (size, color, location, etc.)

  19. Managing Multiple Bar Codes • Objective/Scope of the Work Group • Expertise required • AIDC, MobileCom, Retail, Healthcare, business information, and business that should represent trading partners from both sides of the trading relationship, third parties, and solution providers • The intent is to have balanced membership from the GS1 Global Retail, MobileCom and Healthcare user communities • Base participants • GS1 Sponsor: Sally Herbert, GS1 Global Office • GS1 Business Unit Manager: Scott Gray, GS1 Global Office • GS1 Project Manager: Chuck Biss, GS1 Global Office • GS1 MobileCom SME: Dipan Anarkat, GS1 Global Office • GS1 Bar Codes Technology Manager: Frank Sharkey, GS1 Global Office • GS1 GSMP Process Manager: Tom Heist, GS1 GSMP

  20. Managing Multiple Bar Codes • Objective/Scope of the Work Group • Additional GS1 participants • Cameron Green, GS1 Global Office – Mobile Commerce • Sabine Klaeser, GS1 Germany • To be determined • The Co-chairs – the goal is one from each sector • Meeting schedule / frequency • Additional consideration • Due to the GS1 MobileCom technology considerations as part of the scope of this project all participating companies will be required to sign the GS1 MobileCom Intellectual Property Policy and Opt in to the scope of this group.
