  1. Quadcopters/Drones A brief overview of multirotors

  2. Sizes • 250 – micro • 300 – phantom/park flyer • 500 – hobby rig able to lift around 2 pound payload • 800+ - Larger rigs for larger commercial payloads

  3. Toys vs. Hobby Vs. Pro • Prices range from $30-$3000+ • Toy and hobby often come with a transmitter • Pro units require powerful 2.4gHz transmitters

  4. Commercial vs. Open Source • There are 2 main players in the commercial quadcopter space • DJI and GAUI • Open source projects are much cheaper but may require more time to fiddle with and perfect. • MWB – based on the Nintendo Wii controller boards • Multi Pirate – Based on the same boards but with more features

  5. DJI and GAUI • Both have great off the shelf solutions. • DJI makes the industry leading NAZA flight controller • GAUI makes a similar all in one flight controller • Gyro stability • GPS capability is extra

  6. MWB (Multi-Wii Board) • Connects to your PC for configuration and had a fully functional GUI • Add-ons include GPS, blutetooth, and 2-way telemetry

  7. FPV (First Person View) • Bird’s eye view (See what the Quad is seeing) • OSD (HUD) • Transmitter/Receiver • Goggles and/or ground station

  8. Propellers and Power Cells • 8-10 inch props for 300-500mm • 3c or 4c Lipo cells • 2c lipo for FPV cam and video transmitter

  9. tri vs. Quad Vs. Hex Vs. OcT • Basically the more motors you add the bigger payload your copter can lift • There is a point of diminishing returns • On hex and above if a motor fails, many flight controllers can fly on the remaining motors

  10. Flying Clubs and Locations • Silent Electric Flyers • Multicopter/Drone meetup • AMA membership
