  1. Permanent Magnet Generator Design and Control for Large Wind Turbinespart one. Adviser:Dr. Yuan-Kang Wu Student:Po-Kai Lin Date:2013.03.27 1 1

  2. ABSTRACT 1.Direct drive permanent magnet generators(PMGs) are increasingly in large onshore and offshore applications. 2.provide a quick overview of permanent magnet generator design and related control issues 3.Permanent Magnet Generator types, and control methods

  3. INTRODUCTION 1.World Wind Energy Association (WWEA) 2.Various generator types and control techniques 3.Reduce costs and improve reliability 4.Permanent magnet generators (PMGs) are capturing more attention

  4. WIND ENERGY CONVERSION SYSTEMS • 1.Fixed speed or Variable speed • 2.Geared or direct drive • 3.Asynchronous Generators or Synchronous Generators

  5. Asynchronous Generators

  6. 1.(SCIG) squirrel cage induction generator with close to fixedspeedand directly connected to the grid. Advantages: configuration is cheap&easy Disadvantages: non-controllable speed, gearbox complexity, and excitation current from the grid 2.(WRIG) Wound Rotor Induction Generator with an external resistor bank connected to the rotor and power electronic circuitry to implement rotor current control Advantages: Efficiency gains Disadvantages:Configuration complexity

  7. 3.(DFIG)Doubly Fed Induction Generator Advantages: variable speed were be controlled Disadvantages: gearbox increases the weight and more power loss and increased costs

  8. Synchronous Generators 1.Electrical excited synchronous generator Advantages: not need the permanent magnets and power electronics conversion Disadvantages: need rare earth materials

  9. Advantages: high efficiency with the elimination of field loss, and it is small and light Disadvantages: don’t need DC excitation circuit 2. Permanent Magnet Generators(PMGs).
