Life science agenda

This week's agenda focuses on the organization of life at the cellular level. Students will learn about various cell structures and their functions, as well as how cells come together to form tissues, organs, systems, and ultimately, organisms. The use of microscopes to study cells and their historical significance will also be explored.

  1. Life science agenda 8/19-8/23/2019 Ms. J

  2. Unit 1A – Organization of Life (Cells) Standard: S7L2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to describe how cell structures, cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems interact to maintain the basic needs of organisms. • Develop a model and construct an explanation of how cell structures (specifically the nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, cell wall, chloroplasts, lysosome, and mitochondria) contribute to the function of the cell as a system in obtaining nutrients in order to grow, reproduce, make needed materials, and process waste. • Develop and use a conceptual model of how cells are organized into tissues, tissues into organs, organs into systems, and systems into organisms.

  3. VOCABULARY • Animal Cell • Cell Membrane • Cell Wall • Cell Theory • Chloroplasts • Cytoplasm • Lysosome • Mitochondria • Nucleus • Plant Cell • Robert Hooke

  4. Monday, 8/19 – Tuesday, 8/20/2019 Work Session: • iReady Diagnostic Testing Homework 8/19: • Lesson 1 Review – p. 48

  5. Wednesday, 8/21/2019 – Cell Structures and Functions Standard: S7L2a. Opening Work Session Closing Anchoring Phenomenon: • High School Football player dies from drinking too much water. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/georgia-teen-dies-from-drinking-too-much-water-gatorade/ Driving Question: • How can drinking too much water harm the human body? Characterization of Living Things – Day 1 • Station Activity (Classes will be held in the Science Lab) **Students should review lab safety rules. Question Stems: • Students will receive an index card. On the index card, they will write a question they do not know the answer to, the cards will rotate around the room, the person that knows the answer will write the answer on the back of the index card.

  6. Thursday, 8/22/2019 – Cell Structures and Functions Standard: S7L2a. Opening Work Session Closing • A Story: Is Sammy Alive? • This is a modification of "Substituted Sammy: An exercise in defining life". It raises some interesting questions about defining life. Characterization of Living Things – Day 2 • Station Activity (Classes will be held in the Science Lab) **Students should review lab safety rules. • Two Dollar Summary • Students will summarize the lesson based on their understanding. Each word will be worth two cents; however, the summary must equal to two dollars.

  7. Friday, 8/23/2019 – Microscopes & Cells Standard: S7L2a. Opening Work Session Closing Investigative Phenomenon: • Cells: A History of Discovery http://www.kidsbiology.com/biology_basics/cells_tissues_organs/cell_history_discovery4.php Driving Question: • How did the microscope help the advancement of cell knowledge? Microscope Lab • Prokaryote/Eukaryote Comparison • Prokaryote/Eukaryote Gallery Walk • Cell Facts Review True/False • Animal and Plant Cell Diagram Alien Cell Writing Assignment **Students should review lab safety rules. Pineapple Levels of Understanding • Levels 1-4 • Used to check students’ level of understanding
