  2. Brainstorming Ideas for Hand in Pen & Ink ~ Thinking for myself Objective: You will use creative thinking in order to brainstorm ideas for your hand in pen & ink. DRILL: Title your page. List the following: (Leave space for your answers) Criteria~ Brainstorm answers~ Creative ideas~ Composition~ Draw at least 4 rectangles for your thumbnail sketches.

  3. Think for yourself: How will I… • Meet the Criteria~ • Be Creative~ • Make an interesting Composition~

  4. Criteria: • Must draw at least one hand in a gesture from observation. • Must show realistic shading to make the hand look 3D. • Must include something else besides the hand, another object, image, another hand, etc… • Must use pen & ink. • Must use mark-making.

  5. Think for yourself:Questions to brainstorm~ • What could a hand symbolize? • What meaning might a hand have? • What else could I include besides the hand(s)? • Which hand gestures will I make to look at? • Do I need someone to pose for me? • How many hands will I draw? • Which art materials do I want to use besides pen & ink? (if any- none are required) • Will I add color? How? Watercolor wash?

  6. Creative Ideas: • Show the anatomy inside. • Draw a picture on the hand. • Use finger prints. • Draw designs like henna. Mendhi • Make a surreal image that is dream-like. • Use mixed media or collage. • Make relief or 3D elements. • Add abstract watercolor!!!!  

  7. Composition • Size- Zoom in or let part of hand(s) touch the side of the paper. • View- Pick an interesting gesture. Bend some fingers • Placement- NOT IN THE MIDDLE. Place hand(s) off to the side or at the top or bottom. • Balance- Evenly distribute your visual weight.

  13. To Thyself Be True Dee Overly is an artist with many creative outlets. Her current emphasis is pen and ink figure drawings with watercolor wash, but her talents also include whittling and making neon signs.
