  1. Islamic Revolution 1979

  2. Before the revolution • Iranians lived in a pro-West monarchy under Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi • Many Iranians considered him a “puppet of the West” Fun Fact: He also used excessive violence to control crowds, as well as using his secret police, the Savak, to control the country.

  3. Along came a man named Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini…. • Khomeini lived in exile in Iraq, and later in France • Khomeini disliked Shah Pahlavi, so he decided to smuggle…

  4. ? Cassette Players!

  5. Khomeini smuggled in cassette players in order to get his message against Shah Pahlavi to the Iranian people, thus creating: The Islamic Revolution!

  6. A little irony… Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi led a pro-Western government. The US CIA had previously helped restore Pahlavi to the throne. In 1978, the US supported and funded the first demonstrations against Pahlavi in order to get him back for raising oil prices. (In other words, the US was now supporting Khomeini, who promoted an anti-Western government.)

  7. And now for some boring dates: • On January 16th, 1979, the rioters had become so out of hand, Shah Mohammed Pahlavi fled the country, leaving a man named Shapour Bakhtiar as Prime Minister. He didn’t last long, because… • On February 1st, Ayatollah Khomeini decided to leave his state of exile and come back to Iran. ………………………………………………………Bakhtiar went into hiding 10 days later, and was soon found and put into exile in Paris. Several year after his exile, he was assassinated.

  8. YayIran! In December 1979, Khomeini became the Supreme Leader of the newly founded Iranian republic, based on a new theocratic* Constitution. *theocracy - adj. a form of government in which God or a deity is recognized as the supreme civil ruler

  9. Thought we would end on a happy note? Think again. On November 4th, 1979, Iranian students stormed the US Embassy, taking 66 people hostage. The US currently considers Iran an enemy.
