  1. Acknowledgments: • School: Glen Eden Intermediate School • Host: Forest & Bird 34 A Charlotte Street, Eden Terrace, PO Box 108055, Symonds St. Auckland 1150 • Funder: New Zealand Science, Mathematics and Technology Teacher FellowshipScheme • Administer: The Royal Society of New Zealand

  2. Waitakere Ranges Ecosystems, What does the future hold? • Objective 1: Develop my knowledge and understanding of Freshwater ecosystems with particular reference to the Waitakere Ranges • Objective 2: Develop my knowledge and understanding of how scientists collect, use and analyse data/information obtained from research • Objective 3: Develop my knowledge and understanding of the science behind the maintenance of conservation areas and their associated plant and pest management, particularly in relation to enhancing the water quality of fresh water in the Waitakere Ranges

  3. Objective 1: Develop my knowledge and understanding of:Freshwater ecosystems with particular reference to the Waitakere Ranges • Freshwater Ecosystem • Testing • Twin Streams

  4. Freshwater Ecosystem • Establish ‘care’ relationships with appropriate Tangata Whenua groupings in the area of the streams they wish to monitor • Survey streams to assess their present condition • Identify areas where there is pollution and ensure that the causes are identified and remedied • Produce a database from which to analyse trends in water quality • Identify areas where riparian vegetation, instream habitat, and/or water quality need improvement and decide how this can be achieved.

  5. Testing • Habitat Habitat assessment riparian and instream • Biological assessment Macroinvertebrate survey ,Bacterial indicators • Physical Features Temperature ,Turbidity/visual clarity ,Water flow • Chemical Characteristics Ph, Dissolved oxygen (DO), Nitrates Phosphates Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD)

  6. Twin Streams

  7. Objective 2: Develop my knowledge and understanding of : How scientists collect, use and analyse data/information obtained from research. • Define the question • Gather information and resources • Form hypothesis • Perform experiment and collect data • Analyse data • Interpret data and draw conclusions that serve as a starting point for new hypothesis • Publish results • Retest

  8. Objective 3: • Develop my knowledge and understanding of :The science behind the maintenance of conservation areas and their associated plant and pest management, particularly in relation to enhancing the water quality of fresh water in the Waitakere Ranges

  9. Regional Pest Management Designed to minimise harm to: • Endangered species • Species diversity • Water quality • Recreation • International trade • Human Health • Soil resources • Maori culture • Primary production

  10. Pest Management • Possums • Rats • Mustelids : Stoats, Weasels, Ferrets • Hedgehogs • Cats • Dogs

  11. The future… • Continue the pest control, including weed control, making the most of advancements in technology • Continue to monitor habitat and species • Improve knowledge of flora and fauna • Expand the area under control • Dedicated Volunteers

  12. My Journey • Dealt with two types of people: • Fob-ol-a-gist • People with passion (PWP)

  13. Fob-ol-a-gist • Just email him/her • (They told me they were working) • I will call you back • (They think I am still working) • After a week you haven’t replied to my email • (So everyone knows I work) • After 2 weeks still no reply to questions • (Are you still there? I am working, I think?)

  14. People with passion (PWP)I am busy but........ • How can I help? • Are you interested in? • This could be a contact? • Go and see ..... • My advise to you would be .... • I think you need to look at.... • I am working on ....

  15. Has it been worth it? • Yes! • And • Thank you!
