  1. RF Power System: power source, distribution Paul Drumm RAL Ambitious title!

  2. RF Baseline Design • RF Power Design driven by cost issues (no funds for a new system) • Optimal – one amplifier per cavity • 2 Amplifiers from LBNL = 4 MW total • 1 or 2 Amplifiers from CERN = 4 MW total • If 1 amplifier – needs a bigger drive? • Spare TH116 Tubes from ISIS • Split or more amplifiers? • Circulator – cavity ↔ amplifier isolation • Hybrid device - possibly cheaper – some coupling? • Assume that we do R&D (trials) when we have the equipment • Need both cavities and one amplifier circuit • Test out a hybrid circuit driving two cavities

  3. Progress since October CM • December LBNL • Discussed shipping equipment to RAL • Two 2 MW power amplifier circuits • Three (300kW) driver circuits • 4616 test stand • LBNL loan – to be written off (eventually) • MoU to be signed

  4. … December • At LBNL • Stripping down for transport • Cleaning • Packing • Shipping…

  5. LBNL Power Amps

  6. 300 kW Driver Amplifier

  7. 4616 Test box

  8. Staff… • Roy Church • Used up quota of days • No Roy till April • RF group at the Daresbury SRS • Mike Dykes (group leader) • Andy Moss (senior RF Engineer) • plus two more • MD & AM are here… ASTeC

  9. Plan for Early 2004 • Limited funds • Berkeley RF system to DL • Strip down and make a technical assessment of the equipment • Cost to refurbish • Confirm equipment is serviceable • 6 month overlap with Roy • Review RF design in the light of CERN RF proposal

  10. For Late FY 2004 • Setting up a test-stand at DL • Hall and facilities available • Need to have got through GW2 • i.e. be in full funding mode

  11. RF Power Systems • 8 MW of RF Power @ 1Hz and 1 ms <8kW> • Expensive to buy new • 201.25 MHZ common to old linacs • LBNL, CERN, ISIS, KEK, Los Alamos • 4 MW from LBNL (2x2MW) + ISIS valves • 4 MW from CERN + new valve ? • How to transmit the power ? • Cheaper, hybrid • Expensive, low risk

  14. ISIS Linac - RF System

  15. TH116 • Thales 5 MW tube • ISIS uses 1 or 2 tubes per year • Few customers for this tube • Thales: • success in small numbers not good • looking at large orders 10-20 tubes • Alternative tubes (?) 2 MW – splitting…

  16. X-Ray Shielding – Conditioning/Running Control Rooms
