  2. An ALLEGORY is a story in which the characters, settings, and events are symbols that stand for abstract ideas, moral qualities, or historical figures or events.

  3. For example, in westerns, the sheriff represents the good and the outlaw represents the bad. One of the major themes in all allegories is good versus evil.

  4. Allegories Can be read on two levels : ARE OFTEN INTENDED TO • Intended to teach a moral lesson OR offer some kind of comment about good versus evil.

  5. In literature, authors often write allegories to say what they want to say, without getting into trouble. This is particularly true in countries where freedom of speech is not recognized.

  6. For example, Animal Farm by George Orwell, is a science fiction novel that features a great deal of allegory. In the novel, animals with human intelligence set up a government on a farm. The pigs take over and abuse that power.

  7. Animal Farm represents (is an allegory for) communism in the Soviet Union (now Russia) by its leader, Josef Stalin.

  8. Some people believe that stories in the Bible are allegorical, which means that they have symbolic meaning.

  9. Some people believe that the Old Testament’s Creation Story is an allegory – that Adam represents man, Eve represents woman, the fruit represents human weakness, and the snake represents sin or evil.

  10. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis is a famous Christian allegory.

  11. The movie Avatar is said to be an allegory as well.
