  2. In the beginning…. • Give & take b/t both groups Natives teach Survival • Trade: crucial part of relations • Fur trade- 1 of earliest forms of trade • French - $ for fur • Natives: Euro. Goods, guns, cloth, jewelry etc • Caused tension & conflict b/t tribes over hunting

  3. Iroquois League – League of 5 Nations • Late 1500’s: 5 tribes unite (Iro. Lang) • settle disputes • Est. unity & gov’t = power • Forced other tribes W of G. Lakes

  4. Cultural Differences • Land ownership: • Natives: shared w/ group • land sacred, not to be changed • Lifestyle adapted to land • Colonists: • ind. Ownership • Develop land = progress & civilization • Adapt land to needs- fences, pastures, cut trees • Farming: • Natives: Community • Colonists: Individ. farms

  5. cultural differences…. • Religion: • Colonists: • Christians- Monotheistic • Strong desire to Convert • Viewed natives as “devils” • Natives: • Rel. tied to nature & Polytheistic • No need to convert others • No disturbing Gods

  6. Native & Colonist Conflicts! • Pequot War: 1637 • Connecticut • Increasing # of settlers = tension • Prominent Mass. Resident killed • Puritans want revenge • Burning @ Mystic, CT • Hunted & killed majority of tribe • Result: near genocide!

King Phillip’s War • 1660: Metacomet (King Phillip) leader of Algonquin in N.E. • Raised b/t whites & Natives • Father had helped Pilgrims • Trade b/t groups but tension too • 1670: Metacomet united Natives from RI to Maine to drive out English • This effort = King Phillip’s War • Natives destroy: 17 English towns, attack 52 others, kill 2,000 settlers, destroy crops, fields, cattle, kidnap people

  8. King Phillip’s war continued… • English strike back: kill/wound 4000 • 1676: English find & kill Metacom • War goes on.. • End- Conquest of N.E. almost complete

  9. Other problems for English: • Land conflict w/ English • Religious & Intellectual changes
