  2. Reasons for Absolutism: • Aristocrats and Monarchs were the natural leaders and lawmakers. • Religion was still a strong force. • Most people still needed to be controlled.

  3. Characteristics of Absolutism: • Gov. control of ALL foreign policy. • Gov. control of Economy, sometimes needs help from a legislative body of the people. • Strict adherence to the Monarch’s preferred religion (usually Catholicism). • Abs. Monarchs crave $$$$$$$$$$$$$!!

  4. Royal families: • The Bourbons, France. • The Romanovs, Russia. • The Hapsburgs, Austria. • The Hohenzollerns, Prussia. • The Tudors and Stuarts, Great Britain.

  5. Things to keep in mind… • “Divine Right”: good and bad. • Importance of a powerful image. • Possibility of Paranoia effecting Monarchs’ decision-making. • Use of Censorship/Propaganda.

  6. Read page 153. write down 1 strength and 1 weakness for each of the 3 political systems. • Which system is best for war? • For peace? • For the economy? • For social order?
