  2. INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE (IBD) FACTS: Canada has among the highest frequency of people with Crohn’s Disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC) in the world, in fact over 200,000 Canadian men, women and children suffer from IBD: IBD Overview Intro to CCFC IBD Research • Every year, over 9,200 Canadians, including children, are diagnosed with IBD. • Onset rates differ across the lifespan: • A clear, single peak in the twenties and then declining for CD. • After a rise in the twenties, a steady rate throughout adulthood for UC. • Approximately 5,000 children are suffering from IBD. • CD is associated with a 47% increased risk of premature death. This includes an increased risk of colorectal cancer. Awareness and Events Opportunities 2008 ESTIMATED IBD PREVALENCE:

  3. The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada (CCFC) is a not-for-profit medical research foundation dedicated to finding the cure for IBD. We are a grassroots Foundation started in 1974 by a small group of parents of children with IBD. CCFC has more then 65,000 supporters and includes members in approximately 80 local volunteer groups across Canada, supported by regionally based staff. CCFC is Canada’s major funder of IBD research. To date, CCFC has invested over $61 million in major medical research projects and is one of the world’s leading sources of non-governmental funding of IBD research. Education is a very important part of our mandate. We provide information to patients, their families, health professionals and the public through our education brochures, speakers’ events and our member publications The Journal and GUT Reaction. (www.gemproject.ca) • This is a unique Canadian research study that will for the first time prospectively (looking forward) study a select group of people who are healthy siblings and offspring of individuals diagnosed with Crohn's Disease.
